I'm not even sure if its off the K but found it on the garage floor under the bike this evening after I'd just r&r the fairing. Could've been there before that tho.
Looks to me like its part of a switch but all the switches are working ok.

Thanks Basic2. If you're refering to the two mounting lugs at the rear of the tank, its way too small. Never had tank clips anyway.
Cheers

That resembles a BMW lock cylinder 'tumbler' of the single sided variety.

One missing and the lock still works smoothly with your key? No worries, that only means one more in ten thousand can open your pannier with their key!

I've had one of these sat on my desk ever since I bought my K, it just fell out of one of the pannier latches. Can they be put back? The locks all work, one latch is a bit dodgy and I always blamed it on this little bit being missing but apparently it's not part of the opening/closing action?

These pieces are the bits that stick out of the inside of the lock cylinder when the key is removed, causing the lock to stay in the holes it's supposed to be in, and keeping it locked. There are tiny springs next to each one which push the 'tumbler' out when the key is taken out. There are four different lengths of them and they relate to the depth of the cut in your key's shank - sticking up at equal heights when the key is in. If there is a tumbler or two missing the key will likely still work, be able to lock, but you increase the chance that someone else's key will fit your lock. In some dealerships the tech will simply grind off the high points of each tumbler except for the last one, which keeps the lock cylinder in your pannier, etc., but which, again, increases the chances another's key will fit.

Here's an example:

I see, thank you. So I should look into the dodgy latch a bit more..
