I'm getting to the end of my restoration and decided to attack the seat as the vinyl was cracked and torn in all the suspect places. I knew this was not the original cover so I was curious as to how it would come off. Piece of cake as it turned out as the original cover was still glued to the foam although removed from the pan, and it is grey! So, this lead to a search and, combined with black tupperware and a black motor, discovered I have a K100RS Style. The red stripes and lettering are naturally missing but the PO did mention there used to be red letters etc on it, so that confirms it.
I have an acre of contact adhesive to remove as well as a few rivets into the plastic pan however it should clean up ok. Some gentle heat saw the grey vinyl part company with the foam and now I will track down some new vinyl. Any suggestions on what/what not to use? Also, how was the original vinyl attached to the pan as I would like to keep this authentic if possible.
And to the historians amongst us, does anyone know how many Style models were produced in '87? I believe this was the only year they were made.
Many tasks for help and advice!

if you can ..post a pic

im guessing it is going to be the 'hard as rock "standard seat " for all the rs and s versions ...the comfort seats were usually an upgrade option on the rt and a standard option on the lt

ive purchased a vinal seat cover from "discovers" in the uk ..which fitted well ..they do all the variations ...and in a few colours ...so look around

heres what I did http://www.k100-forum.com/t10084p50-85-rt-resto-my-attempt-hey-im-not-into-making-a-show-bike#117336

I also have one of these and from memory I recall seeing that only 600 of this were manufactured. maybe someone else can confirm.

Mine is still in original condition with the original red stickers, only mods are a Motad exhaust and Koni shock. A great bike that I have had all over Europe over the past few years.

Thank you for your replies Charlie and Ringfad.
Charlie, I am happy to stay with the original seat as it will not be my main touring ride. I have a K12RS for that purpose. This will be used for day runs and the occasional overnighter as this bike has huge sentimental value and has had a full restoration. The original seat cover design is a pretty plain affair without piping so a local recover should do the trick. May even have a crack at it myself.
Ringfad, thanks for the info on production numbers. Adds a wee bit of exclusivity to the bike but probably not much additional value. Still you never know in years to come... I might try and hunt down some stickers if they are still available otherwise I will need to try and copy the artwork somehow. Does yours have the red striping as well? If it does could you post a couple of detailed pics so I can see how it looks?
Thanks

For the purists.....the red pinstripe that going around the fairing nose is non OEM.

It should be a emblem with the motorsport colours in front of the RS emblem
(this seems to be present on Simon's bike).
A similar emblem should be in the front of the K100 emblem at the fastback.

Hey, this is great feedback! Thank you very much for the photos Ringfad and clarification on oem Inge. I do have the emblem on the front screen and on the back of the fast back. Another picture I've seen show a pinstripe running from the headlight area (not around the nose) all the way back to the tail however I do not think this is oem. Other than the red pinstripe is Ringfad's bike original? I have a blank canvas or should I say black canvas to work on and would like to keep it as original as possible. Does anyone know if the 'style RS' decals and motorsport strip decals are available?
Seat is currently away having a new grey cover fitted. At first I didn't like the grey but with so much black on the bike it looks good.
Thanks again.

Thanks very much Inge. I guess my best option may be to purchase the LHS and then have a sign maker copy it and modify it for the RHS. I have emailed motorbikestickers.eu and will give him some time to come back to me with his options

I have heard back from Thayer and Motor bike stickers and unfortunately neither can help. Next option I will explore is getting a copy of the LHS decal reversed (sort of) for the RHS. I will ned to buy the LHS decal so this might add up to a few hard earned dollars but reckon it will be worth it.

Hi kiwiK100

I would also be interested in a set of these, maybe we could share the cost.

Let me know how you progress.

Here is a motorcycle decal specialist in Sydney that I know of. Might be worth an inquiry email.
Have not had decals done myself but have had K tanks welded up by this guy (old time biker type guy).
