Hello to all K drivers and owners....Let me start by thanking everyone for allowing me to be a part of this group, although I must admit I don't own a K100, rather a 1993 K-75 standard, hopefully this doesn't immediately disqualify me. The "reason" I don't have a K100, at least "yet," is that in trying one out many years back, the high-pitch buzz from the engine (I believe) transmitted numbing sensations to my hands and feet. Then I tried out a K-75, which didn't have the same punch but was absent the buzz, so I became a K-75 devotee and have remained so for 25 years. I have to admit, I've seen some damn beautiful K-100 RS's, I think maybe the 16 valve models ?? but maybe the distinction that stands out to me is the RS styling, but whatever it is, I like the lines of it and wouldn't mind owning one some day if the buzz has been dealt with. Since I'm unfamiliar with how to post or do things here....can somebody please tell me how to join the "Photo Contest for 2015" so I can show off my K-75, which is a very clean machine that fits me like a German glove ! Just to put some things in perspective the forum is K75 and K100 and K1100. More than a few members have the K75 and lots have both K75 and K100 and even K1100 all parked beside each other.

Just because you are cylindrically challenged doesn't make it any less so enjoy the welcome and don't be afraid to ask questions. The ones you regret are the ones you don't ask. There is a huge wealth of expertise on the forum.

We all started somewhere and everyone is very helpful to the extent that we do enjoy some wisecracks and banter. The guys in Ireland and Australia are pretty good at meeting up too, if you are ever coming over this way do let us know.

The 'buzz' is known on the K100 to occur at 4,000rpm but interestingly my 84K100RT doesn't have it while the 92 K100LT has it at bang on 4,000rpm. Both are 8 valve engines. Keeping engine nicely in tune does help and that's easy to achieve.

Three posts and you are in and yes we would love some photos.

Many thanks for the welcome and comments, folks, I'm a tried and true K-75 guy, but like I said in my 1st message, I'd love to find a K100 RS in the 16 valve set-up...it seems they have a very particular look with superb lines, maybe somebody could tell me what year model I'm speaking of, if that makes any sense. I haven't researched it myself, so that's lazy, but I just know one when I see it. They look more dressed up with sharper looking valve covers and stuff, I think I'm speaking of the RS models, but I'm not real K-100 knowledgeable. Anyway, maybe one day I'll come across one at the same time my financial ship has come in...and voila...jacks-a-doughnut and I'm on a K100 RS. But for now I'm satisfied with my triple brick for its sweet smoothness and handling, yet there are moments I wished it had a tad bit more horsepower, especially if I have a lady on the back, but that's what a transmission is for, right ? I'm fond of that old saying "if you're lucky enough" like if "you're lucky enough to have a three cylinder BMW in a beautiful mountain environment...you're lucky enough." That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Ride safe, new friends....BeeJay

Well for a laugh I could say the solution is a smaller lady or bigger bike.

However Kpox, a disease that causes you to keep buying Ks, is prevalent so sooner or later it will be the bigger bike.

The 16 valve K100RS, if you find a 16 valve from 89 onward. The standard BMW panniers tank bag and luggage all fit.

I was a bit puzzled not by the wheels but the final drive Monolever as I thought it as not used on the 8 valve engines but 16 valve. I didn't look at the wheels but yes I should have....

welcome brickjockey! I too am a new member as of 1-2-16. You will like these guys as they seem to know their stuff. I had a 92 k100 RS. It was a nice bike just too buzzy. If you really want the cream of the crop check out the 95 k1100 RS se, black and silver! Most of the buzzy is gone and got the looks to go along with it. Anyway I don't want to offend anyone its just my opinion. Think I could find room in my garage for it.Good luck

Opinions differ.....which is why there are quite a few members with K Kollections rather than just one K!

It was only after I got the 84RT that I started thinking about that 4,000rpm buzz because it doesn't have it. But the 92LT had it. I still don't know why but am inclined to think getting injectors etc right can make a difference. Trouble is that anything that rotates can cause a vibration so could be anything from sophisticated engine mountings to balancing engine parts to ancillaries like alternators or output shafts or flywheels or clutches. Designers usually try to balance these things out by contra rotation of some items and use of balance shafts.

There is some clue in the fact that the K75 doesn't have it.

Now here is a question. Someone has fitted K75 pistons in the K100 to raise the compression ratio to 11:1. Does or did this affect the buzz??

As a K75 rider only I have one that I kollected in The Fatherland 24 1/2 years ago and have had a similar affair with them.  So much so that I have never ridden a K100, although I did buy one in pieces once for a mate. 

I think that the 8 valve K100RS SE is about the best looking K out there along with the K75S with 3 spoke wheels.

Having A K75 qualifies you even more than a K100 :-) ha ha.
