Mike, the earlier K-bikes are sometimes thought to be inferior, and it's true that through the years improvements were made. That's natural evolution, right? Suspension, brakes, they are more sophisticated on bikes from the later years. But I bought a nice 1985 K100RS and I'm completely happy with it. 90 hp is good enough for me, two valve per cylinder are fine; even the brakes stop well enough for me. However, there is one aspect of my bike that gives me heart burn. The airbox/throttle bodies arrangement makes it pretty tough to work on them due to lack of room. The good news is, once sorted out, these engines don't demand much from the rider as far as I can tell. They are stout and long-lived! Bottom line for me is, the year is less important than the care and maintenance showed the bike by the previous owner(s).

88KE recently acquired a very nice K1100RS. As he posted elsewhere I was dispatched to take an advance look before he made the 3 1/2 hour journey to have a look.

I was impressed with it to put it mildly and said so to 88KE.

However my first K was a 1992 K100LT which was followed by a 1984 K100RT. The RT in age was a step backwards but it felt so much better to me than the LT. Lower miles was only part of it, height and other riding positiondifferences despite being fairly similar bikes. Other factors were a lower weight and seemingly quicker handling. The decision to go for the 84 RT was simple made on the condition when I went to see it, along with the fact that the seller was a forum member who had posted some maintenance issues.

But on to the K1100RS, yes very different but I had previously tried one and had felt I didn't want any more weight than the RT. An inch or two taller and yes I would go the K1100. I faced the same dilemma many years back when I wanted a Honda CB750 and had to settle for a CB500-4 due to height but never regretted it.

Brickrider sums it up well, be guided by the condition rather than the age........but that K1100 is one nice ride.

With some cars and bikes its not absolute power that makes them nice but the balance between power and handling and the K has that in abundance.

From the wife's point of view, there is never a satisfactory answer to that question!
