Hey all, I am new to the BMW world but have ridden for years on Japenese bikes. I am already smitten with my 87 K100 LT, but already have a lot of questions. (Like why does the kick stand retract and allow me to slam my shoulder into a gas pump when I pull in the clutch) I look forward to all your input.

Hi OU812 was it tasty. Welcome to our strange world. Rolling Eyes
The clutch retracts the side stand for safety reasons. BMW did not put it there to drive us crazy well thats the story and they are dticking to it.
It can be disconnected easily byremoving the actuating rod.

Welcome to the Forum.

I've disconnected the stand retractor thingo on my bike, if anything, to save the life of the clutch cable.

Van Halen fan, by chance?

Thanks all, and yep, Van Halen was my first album and concert!

A friend has already informed me that the side stand is to allow all the cylinders to fill with oil and smoke out mosquito problems in the neighborhood. I stick to the center stand mostly, but now I am mentally prepared for the "auto-retract"

Thanks for the greeting!
Jake

I've never used the side stand on my '85 K100RS, as it seems to allow the bike to lean at an alarming angle. The stand has a bend in it, which I suspect is not how it came from the factory.

Welcome too.

As for the side stand my LT had the clutch cable retraction and I like that one but you must keep it really well lubed to avoid breaking the cable. The risk is some dickhead trying the clutch while the bike is parked on the side stand........

The RT had the self retracting side stand and when I took the bike for a test run couldn't get it to stay down. I had the seller cut the pin to stop it retracting before I took it away as I couldn't get off the bike.

Don't know much about Van Halen? Are they like Van Veens?

Welcome!!!

The sidestand is a vital piece of kit for us pensioners as it can get a bit dicey trying to disengage oneself from these top heavy beasts without putting it down first. The second problem which Motorad so obligingly addressed is that our minds aren't quite what they used to be, what with the chemical experiments we engaged in during our younger years and we are often wont to ride off with said stand in the fully deployed position.

Now, please excuse me whilst I chase those damn kids off my lawn...

Grass when teenagers.......'Cutting my grass' = getting high.
Grass when pensioner........'Cutting my grass' = tending to my lawn

Amazing how the meaning changes in between. Always look on the bright side of life..
