Greetings all. Snagged a 1989 K100LT from a friend a few weeks ago. Plan is to yank it all apart to it's bones and hopefully put it all back together! I've never attempted anything quite like this so will doubtless be picking some brains here.

Welcome to the forum. Lots of pickable (and a few pickled) brains here. You're also close enough for a bit of hands on help too.

Is the LT on the road at the moment?

Bill

Welcome!  Erwin Rommel, one of Germany's most famous generals during WWII often said that one of his greatest accomplishments was taking a BMW motorcycle completely to bits and reassembling it without having even one part left over.

Working on these wonderful machines is a great exercise in organization and attention to detail.  Some people do jigsaw puzzles while others do BMW's.

welcome aboard

hate to say it ...but make sure it runs well first ..
then as you rebuild you have  starting point instead of pulling apart things that you just assembled .

take lots of pics on the disassembly, it will help
cheers

Rommel, the most overrated general since Alexander the Great.
Just a ordinary man in war!

Besides that, it's nice to take a motorcycle apart and learn how it was build.
Make a post it to every cable and store the screw with a note in small boxes and pictures are very helpful.

Cheers

Thanks Bill, not rideable right now. It was riding when I got it so it does work but I've yanked a lot of stuff off already.

Mind if I ask my first stupid question...I sent pictures of my final drive spline and pinion to Brunos. Unfortunately he is on sick leave for the rest of the year (hope he is ok). He responded saying the pinion is fine but the spline is shot and I should replace with OEM drive shaft.

this is the part I need to replace right?

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NOS-Genuine-BMW-Gearbox-Output-Shaft-23211457195-K75-K100-K1-K1100-RS-LT-RT-/111536682265?hash=item19f81ab519:g:24gAAOSwQJhUfdE1

Seems like a decent price.

The link shows the output shaft to the gearbox, seldom any problem With the splines at that end of the driveshaft.
What Bruno probably have in mind is the shaft between the gearbox and FD, like this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-K100-K100RS-K100RT-Driveshaft-Drive-shaft-used-/262225934071

If I remember correctly it's mentioned earlier on this forum that it's shop(s) where you can have New splines welded on ...Down under.
You can also buy this part to weld on from Motobins or Motorworks in UK.

Mike,

You will be amazed how well BMW designed the K bike and how easy it is to work on. It should be an easy task to rebuilt it with the help of this forum members.
As others said, do a general assessment of what has to be done and then take the decision to invest money on a full rebuilt.
Welcome to the forum.

CF

Just check you have the same number of spline teeth. That one is for up to 02/86. Yours is an 89. The splines changed from 16 to 20. Sometimes the FD has been changed tho... like mine

.... and welKome to the forum Mike. We're having a get together next month with a bit of a ride and socialising to welkome one of our visiting pommie members to the settlement. Would be a great opportunity for you to catch up with quite a few of our members and pick their brain out... seriously! We'll accept members turning up for the BBQ on 4 wheels. 🤡

Hi mike welcome to our strange corner of the www
For the shaft go here https://www.motobins.co.uk/bmw-parts.php?model=K%20Series&bikeref=K100 and have a look at the spline replacement at the bottom of the page. If your uni is OK then this is thw way to go.

My plan was to move all the way up to the clutch as per Chris Harris' YouTube videos. I want to check the clutch splines and the clutch itself. The bike's frame looks good, no rust and nice and straight. Going to remove this and check it out 100%. Wheels seem good but have to get them off and check the runout etc.

Are there any other major scary things ($$$) I should look at before I start buying bits to do the bike up? It has 140,000km. I bought it really cheap (just over $2,000 AUD) so don't mind spending that again in making it awesome. I'd rather figure out the problems first and worse case keep it for spares and buy one with less milage.

I will start a new thread and post photos as I tear it down so if anyone spots some scary stuff I'd really appreciate it.

Welcome Mike from another Sydney sider.

If you are going to spend what seems to be a lot of money on one part, ask here first. Generally there is an alternative available.

Motorworks and Motobins are the two main sources for parts, but given the exchange rate it is often worth while looking locally.

Munich Motorcycles in Perth carry most stock and can be expensive, but a lot of stuff works out the same price or cheaper after you take off 36GBP postage I paid the other day and his stuff is delivered overnight.
