I have spoken to Tracey, Mrs groverK, and of course offered any help at any time that is required.

olfart47, I'm just over at Greta so if you need anything to assist don't hesitate. Ed has my mobile number. I'll PM you if you can get PMs after a couple of posts - wish this was under more pleasant circumstances.

Regards

That blue bike and trailer is very hard to see. Idiots who can't use their eyes or brake pedal.

Hope all your bones are still there Ed and still in the right places.

Sorry to hear the bad news, but thanks for sharing - hoping there's no serious damage to either Ed or Ol'blue (glad to hear Rhys just 007 martini'd - shaken, not stirred).

I have just spoken to Eddie and he's in good spirits, he will have an overnight stay in hospital for observation and more X-ray's. Rhys has a plaster on he's wrist. It sounds like they are both very lucky.

Sorry to hear that, good to hear its mostly observation and no more.

Been rear ended too, coincidentally on the blue LT.

At least the spirits are up a bit despite being Karted off to hospital. The hard bit is when you come back and see your K, the good bit is finding it could have different.

Hope we see you both back soon.

G'day All, Have just been to visit young Ed at John Hunter Hospital and happy to report he is pretty chirpy and more relaxed than last night I reckon. He is still waiting for X-Ray results on ankle and if OK Ed reckons he'll be home later today. He was lucky that he was not injured more seriously and it reinforces again the need to wear the right gear. Rhys has had surgery on his right wrist and is also progressing well.
So, all in all not a bad situation. Cheers Tom

I was waiting to hear some good news and that's it - thank you. It sounds like the injuries were relatively minor.

KH - sometimes mirrors are no use. I've been rear-ended twice (on the same day!!!!! affraid ). First time resulted in a scratch to the front bumper of the lady that hit me - she admitted she hadn't been paying attention. No damage there. Just fifteen minutes later I was in stationary traffic and all I heard was a squeal of brakes from behind. Without looking I knew that was aimed at me and I was literally in the process of abandoning my bike when I was hit. Somehow I stayed on my feet and ran in front of a stationary dumper truck for protection while my bike (a 1000SP Guzzi) went the other way. No amount of paying attention to my mirrors would have stopped either accident and I guess the same probably applies to Ed and Rhys.

But then again, I wasn't there.

Back in the room everyone , and yes spirits are in fine form .

The long of it is we attended a local event to help them promote motorcycle camping and detailing .
Fantastic Sunday out after such a dismally wet start to the day . old blue ed 13087710

A good crowd made their way down to the Rathmines waterfront on the edge of Lake Macquarie.
old blue ed 12524110

The M.E.S.H.C.C  group provided some quality products to show the ease of maintaining your pride and joy.
old blue ed 13123310

Gary Patterson , a top bloke , showing his prowess in detailing.
old blue ed 13147410

Ed , not sure what his speciality is ..........
old blue ed 13082610

A slight bump on the way home , shouldn't have used so much shine on the tyres....

The truth ,
finished off a top day out with Rhys at the camping Expo , and headed up the M1 freeway to home , about 30mins .
made it halfway home , and a tin lid after passing a long row of heavy traffic behind me , decides to zip in behind me , him still doing 110kmh, me a modest 90kmh with the Kart on board with Rhys as pillion.
Not sure who got the biggest shock , just as I noticed the car approaching at good speed up behind us , Rhys glanced back to see the car about to impact , the lid driver ... well , a brown moment for sure.
The result , being hit from directly behind ( his words to the police " I clipped him on the side" , police decided otherwise.
The towbar was a saving grace for sure , absorbing most of the brunt.
Rhys and I were ejected immediately , sliding about 30metres along the road , ending in the gutter out of harms way.
Ol' Blue travelled approx 100 metres from the initial impact , whilst the Kart with towbar fully intact remained within 20 metres of the impact site.
The fuel light had been on , so fuel was low in the tank . The trailer a ticking time bomb , was carrying 3 loaded gas cylinders , all remained intact... pheeewwwww.
Tracey ( my wife ) arrived on site soon after , retrieving as much as she could , the rest taken by the tow guys.
Scattered along the way included most of Blue's luggage , panniers , glove boxes, top box, left side fairing. most of which have damage , but have been salvaged .
Rhys and I spent Sunday night in JHH ( hospital) , and released out on Monday night to our families relief.

Partners in Krime, cheers from Ed and Rhys.
It was much appreciated to receive a visit from young Tom, to help lift the spirits . It was one of those rare moments that a camera was not close by , otherwise a pic for a certainty . Thanks Tom and to all for your kind messages.
old blue ed 13151910

During Rhys's recovery from surgery , he was treated to a visiting reptile show .
old blue ed 13151911

Rhys on his way to a speedy recovery.

Ol' Fart and I will be visiting the tow yard on Saturday to collect what is left before they hit us with storage fees.

old blue ed 13151710

old blue ed 13151810

Best investment was our Aldi helmets , which were put to full use on the road surface .
As Tom mentioned and many more would support , good equipment is a must .

No real plans at this stage for Blue , need to recover the body and soul first .
My thanks go to all here on the forum for your support and encouragement during this time . it is very much appreciated.

Mate Great to have you sitting there typing to us.
MESHCC is the Motorcycle Enthusiasts Shed (Hunter and Central Coast) Areas.
Hope this was a good event. Beyond Blue run the Mens Sheds so were they into this or was it just the local sheds doing it?
All things considered by Tuesday most of the initial trip down the road should be past you aching muscles.
Mend well Ed.

not sure how well it will roll when we get it back , there could have been pressure on the wheel , causing damage to the drive and gearbox .

Now the legal process begins. Is the thumper...ie the bloke who thumped you insured? [i]f so the insurance company usually wants to see your bike on "neutral" ground. Your bike may not yours if the bike is written off... you may have an option to buy it back. Col went through these things after his accident a few years ago.

Today , Tracey and I dropped Rhys off to school , and made our way down to inspect the leftovers of the Karnage .

Still some life left in the Ol' boy

old blue ed Img_5810

old blue ed Img_5811

trailer coupling twisted under force.
old blue ed Img_5711

The trailer connectors are still intact , leaving us with the question  , how big is the hole in the gearbox .
old blue ed Img_5813

Visible signs of engine or gearbox oil . could be the sidecase is leaking oil.
old blue ed Img_5713

the rear of the trailer shows the point of impact .
The offending driver told the police onsite that he just clipped us , not so was the response from the officer . We were hit square on .
old blue ed Img_5812

Looking at the wheel alignment and forks , theres a bit of a twist in there.
no visible buckling in the wheels

old blue ed Img_5714

funny enough , the topbox which is known to open of its own accord , remained shut even after being ejected from the ducktail.
old blue ed Img_5815

the tank receiving some pressure , thankfully I was running on the orange light with about 3 litres on board.
old blue ed Img_5814

old blue ed Img_5710

I haven't tried rolling the bike as yet , so not sure if the rear wheel is "free" at this stage.
old blue ed Img_5712

We have paid for the kartage to the towyard , and bike and Kart will be in our possession tonight .
All will be home by tomorrow , so the legal stuff can start then .
We will use these pics and the police pics from the scene to process our claim against the driver.
The police have advised they will formerly investigate his licence ,as this is his second offence of this nature in the past 6 months.

Ironically the t-shirt of choice for the day on Sunday was " AC/DC - HIGHWAY TO HELL "
old blue ed Highwa10

I know there will be many offers here to help get us back on the road , and they are very much appreciated .
Short term is to right the body and souls , Rhys is still having images of the car coming at us , just glad we can both share this experience . He knows I will understand his thoughts .
For myself , not sure how I feel about it all.
Thanks for all of your support and messages.
Cheers Ed.

Mend well Ed.

I have a sneaking feeling that it's a write off.
All you can do is put it down to experience and move on Ed. Then take a deep breath after the sore muscles have gone and go in for the kill on the idiot and take him for all you can. Don't try to deal with the insurance company yourself get a good lawer on a no pay no win basis. From experience get one of the big mobs that specialize in road crashes.
The main thing is that you and Rhys are still here to tell the story.

Ed I cant see how the gearbox got a hit, yes the trailer copped it and the towbar but it appears the towbar wasn't mounted to the frame gearbox mount as mine is, So must have been bolted to the foot pegs which would explain the state of the L/side Footpeg in the above pic. So I would suggest the rear is fine for use in another frame if your frame gets written off, by all means keep as much as you can, the frame is the one thing that gets written off if bent, the frame Number is held accountable for a cost write off as well. Cost meaning too much plastic to replace. Mind you that means in NSW you cant go comprehensive again without a engineers report, from what I have been told. May be wrong. I would expect your final drive wheels swing arm and gearbox to be OK.
I can donate a tube of superglue for the fairing Smile

Ol' Fart provided some easy transport for Ol' Blue returning home today.
I even had a play in the process.
Not keen to start the bike at this stage due to fluids everywhere , including fuel .

checking the Lights and indicators

old blue ed 13164410

The previous issue seems to lie in the left handlebar cluster, as the headlight comes on with some manipulation of the high beam switch.
old blue ed 13173910

Left rear indicator is out of action , so dash light and front indicator compensate until new globe goes in .

It could of sheered the bolt off and left the thread in there or pulled it and left a hole threadless but not really part of the oil tightness of the gearbox from memory, its an add on in the casting. But needed for holding on a footpeg.

that seems about right Keith , I did a quick inspection before it became dark . The hole is empty and the mould seems to have very little around it .
I've been thinking lately prior to the accident, to remodel the K as a naked . A strip down will be necessary anyway, and less costly to rebuild .

once again , thanks to all for the great support.

Waz , naked or Kafe are low cost possibilities once the legals are sorted.
I have a bikini fairing with high screen that has been awaiting installation , which I picked up from Malcoops.
It will allow for better ventilation and retain upper body protection.
brief  inspection shows lights are functional , rear wheel is free and rotates without issues, gear selector is straight and intact , brakes are working , clutch is working with slight stiffness.
Crash bars seem to have worked.
A slight misalignment (twist) in the front forks , about 3-5 degrees, Right fork leads the left by about 30-50mm, but not showing signs of being bent.
Handlebars will most likely need replacing . signal clusters appear ok , no cracks.
rear frame loop made have been stressed , as the seat is elevated and the latch is under tension and resists opening.
head light mount (tree) is twisted off centre .
