I can't seem to locate a simple, standard seat pan for my 85 k100rt that I can reupholster (for a reasonable price). I have a one off custom seat that pushes my knees into the faring so I need something to work with. If all else fails, I'll tear this one apart. Please let me know if you have any suggestions or ideas.

Thanks!

I've got a gray one from a 1990 K75RT, rode it for a week before switching to a Corbin. Make me an offer...

Heaven knows what shipping will cost though

Cheers, Lorne

Shipping from Canada probably wouldn't be too bad but, I don't think that seat will fit my 85.

If the gas tank is bolted down under the seat with a single bolt at the back of the tank then you need the earlier seat which has a steel base and the grab handles are screwed to the seat base.

If the gas tank is not bolted then it should have the two clips and the later seat will fit. The later seat has a resin base and no grab handles.

It's definitely the earlier model. The seat that's in there now has a steel base and integral grab handles. Thanks for confirming my thoughts.

If you want a comfortable seat I had a BMW 'Comfort' seat on the later LT and preferred it.

A good seat guy would be able to either take the foam off a later 'Comfort' seat and make it fit or re-cover the earlier one to match.

The 'Comfort' seat is not leather and in my book the leather on the Corbin seat is too hard and anyway if the bike is out in the wet the vinyl cover is better and it was very soft and deep.

I had planned on doing that until someone local to me was making a café racer our of an 84RS and I managed to get the clocks and seat when he was selling off the bits.

That's something I will look into. I was thinking I could forge my own "comfort" seat since I'm on a strict budget (wife controls the finances Smile .)

It's the shape of the rear cowl that determines whether a seat fits. 1983 through 1985 seats are exclusive to those years because of the built-in grab handles, and 1986-on seats fit any model from then on, but beware of the low versus high version due to side cover and tank shroud issues.

Here's a Corbin that'll fit on eBay:

And another:

Thank you for the links and explanation. Forgive my naievity but, what prevents the seats from being transferable? Width, length, hardware? All of the above?

Pre '86 the passenger handles are built into the seat, post they're in the rear cowl.

The grab handles on the earlier seat are screwed to the seat base from underneath. I have never investigated if these could be screwed to the later seat.

I haven't investigated if changing the rear cowl would allow the later seat to be used but my 84RT and 92LT both have identical Krauser K2 panniers which use the same Krauser pannier rails but the mounting arrangements are very different suggesting there may be other differences in the rear frame.

I transferred the comfort seat off a K1100LT 1993 onto my K100RT 1984. Went straight on ... but had to replace the hinge pin with a split pin (bit of a bodge).

Will probably switch it back.

Foam is too soft (feels like an old lounge) and the position is too far forward; now that I have the full fairing back on my knee is inside the fairing and is a bit of a worry getting the leg clear when coming to a stop.

Promised a lot ... didn't deliver.

Thanks a lot for that one.

I may try that as I found it very comfortable and liked the soft sink into the seat feeling. The seating position forward does become an issue for taller riders but I am not in that category. Not sure if the K100 and K1100 comfort seats are the same. Mine isn't the low seat version.

Guy , when I first bought my LT with comfort seat , I found it pushed me forward into the fairing . When the time came to renew the cover , I had the upholsterer add some extra in the crotch of the seat . this helped immensely , giving greater comfort over longer rides . hope you find a cure and enjoy the K .

If a K11LT seat fit on an 84 K100 then somebody had already upgraded from 85- tail cowl to an 86+ tail cowl. (not uncommon)

I have a 1985 Corbin with a beat to hell cover but the seat pan is good.  $40 + shipping. PM me your zip code if interested.

The first part of my post was about a K11LT fitting on an early K100.

The latter part was to you.  Does your tail cowl look like the upper one in the pic I posted?
