Hello all:
l I love my K buthave been attracted to another...there have been times I have casually looked at big buxom K1200RS's and GT's in passing in those dirty bike mags behind the counter....I have even gone round to some seedy bike resellers and "thrown a leg over".

I feel so dirty but equally enthralled and excited at the prospect of a new girl.

Now do you guys have an opinion...of course you do ...is it a grass is greener thing or am I about to make a big mistake.

Anyone love or hate the big buxom German...she is 285KG (not that there is anything wrong with that) and built for comfort as well as speed...nice wide tyres, all adjustable everything.

Ah that's the AE version of the K. We don't see too many of those here but definitely a nice machine.

Mate , seems the term " upsizing " is taking over the forum .
A while back I tried out the K1200LT for Olfart47. Ifound it nice on the straights , but when I returned it to the cul de sac , I compared it against the 100 on the turn , and found the 100 more nimbler .
Having said that , after riding Smurfette this week , I am very happy with the 1100 , even more so the RS , I was very much at home and comfy , as I had discussed with you along the way . So , when do you pick it up ?

Big Blue Grover I am actually relying on positive /negative response from my peers.
I did also look at the K1200LT but my goodness it is a huge lump of heavy German steel that is larger and heavier than my daughters car...comfy as on a straight road but so cumbersome at low speed where most dramas occur even on K100's.
I was going to check another GT out tomorrow but its my boys 18th and it would be rude to give myself a huge present...perhaps the day after?

I just put 12 mths rego/CTP/fullcomp insurance on the RS too.
Your decision would be much easier I think Very Happy

I upsized some years ago and regreted it. The K100 was a much better bike than the K1100 but that is comparing individual bikes. IMO the K1200LT is very overrated and as for getting the best bike in the last models of the mighty brick my choice is the K1200GT. Some time ago I was considering upsizing just as you are and decided not to do it and build my own special. Now you are welcome to ask by PM but there are a few here who know about it.
Ask yourself a pertinent question:- Do I need it if the answer is yes then go get it and if the answer is no then go get it because you don't need a good reason to get a new beast you dont even need a pathetic excuse.

I'm not fussed on bikes with as much plastic covering everything as the 1200 has.

I love my old old girl but I've been hankering for something a little yonger. Something to handle the longer distance more reliably and with a little more grunt. I considered a K1200RS and nearly bought a 2002 model but in the end I couldn't resist the traditional style of a 1996 K1100RS.... marakesh red of course.
We've covered nearly 5,000km together over the last 2 weeks and about another 2,500km before I get back home. No regrets.
Cheers

I rode a friend's K1200GT down the road once. It vibrated quite a lot at tickover but was turbine smooth above it, had enough flashing lights to confuse an astronaut and was so heavy that the front seemed to actually truly push wide while doing low speed turns. It also took off like a spaceship when I touched the throttle!

Overall it was impressive and yet somehow massively unimpressive, far too much of everything for general road use. Certainly the owner didn't know what to do with it, he hardly used it and rode it with big doses of trepidation when it did finally see the road. He sold it for an F800S and never looked back.

Klompy, if you want it, get it and keep the rs. I certainly notice the difference between my basic 100 and the modified rt..... difference in weight and ease of parking and moving about. The basic for around town and short trips, the rt for the long trips needing protection from the elements. I suspect that that K1300 Gt is a better option as it is lighter than the 1200.

Depending on your maintenance skills/patience you may find all that covering a chore/pain. The Chris Harris Youtube maintenance videos maybe enlightening as he was a dealer tech when the K1200 launched. Not having seen one in person my opinion is of low value but that weight would rule it out for me.

That was a thought I had when considering a K1200RS.... so much plastic to do battle with (the K1100RS I bought is bad enough). I figured that being a later model there would be less tinkering and if you planned your maintenance well, it would be a yearly chore to remove fairings (6 monthly at worst).

I must admit to eyeballing k1200s from time to time on the small ads. Maintenance has never been an issue for me but it does take time, as a D.I.Y.er, to learn a new model. Cracking plastic clips etc put me off. Interesting comments about low speed stability/manoeuvrability -

I would have though any brick rider would handle most machines without a problem due to their experience.

watching your next move with interest.

Gents I have decided and I took great head of your advice as it made excellent sense..

I ride because its a great way to de-stress, see stuff, share times with mates....I ride K's cause they are user friendly, reliable and charismatic and all my riding mates have similar feelings , thoughts.

So I have found myself a vehicle that will suit my needs, requirement for a specific seating position, legroom and performance...and not toooooo heavy. I found the 1200 really awkward at low speed and access a lot more restrictive.

I have agreed to purchase a 1995 K1100LT purportedly owned and maintained by a BMW wrench.
nearly 160K but as we all know that is not an issue with K's...bike came from Mayborough QLD but for sale here in Sydney....I may think about selling my RS to someone who would lavish love and affection on her as I have but also looking at club rego to keep her not decided yet.

Thanks for your opinions and yes I did take them on and here I am. :O) Very Happy

My ex RT (Bob) K100RT costs me under $200 a year for rego and comprehensive insurance under the scheme. 60 days per year might be a bit limiting if it was the only bike, but as one of 2 currently registered, works great for me.

Good pick Klompy.

You'll find the K1100LT is an absolute long distance mile muncher. Mine has around 155,000 km on it and has taken me across the continent east west and back and north south a couple of times, to Darmin and to Cairns plus around Tassie.

Let's chat sometime, 95 was a good year.

Cheers

I tried a K1200RS. Yes BIG, fast, handled well at medium to higher speeds, but I found four things I didnt like. Firstly, for me the footpegs were too high, secondly, the stretch over the tank to the bars was too far, thirdly, it was big around town, the K100 felt like a bicycle after riding the K12 for a few days, and fourthly, it was too fast and I could see myself doing my license within a month or two. And lastly, it just didnt gel, I prefer the K100 to ride.

And looking back through this thread, I see you've bought a K1100. Good move.

Unfortunately the sale fell through on the 1100 so whilst metaphorically kicking a tin can down the road I happened upon a K1200GT.

Now this is/was a little more than I wanted to spend but I thought no harm taking one for a ride to feel what differences there were between 1984 and 2007.

Firstly there is all the fruit you could wish for with seperate bum warmers ( front and pillion), hand warmers, cruise, stereo, ABS (that worked) wide wheels 180 on the back 120 on the front, auto choke, cruise control. So once I had checked for rear main seal leakage, paralever bearing issues, ABS lights working and off when going...I then threw a leg over and the seat height is lower so its flat footed, the handle bars are really wide with a shimmy damper fitted and this one had a REMUS zorst. Power ridiculous, clutch on/off, brakes (oh my god) and very steady through peak hour traffic and the fan did not even come on.

I have the changeover figure in my head but frankly I cannot see that the 1200 is that much better than my RS...so I enjoyed the ride home without fearing the brakes, or neck breaking acceleration or the huge shadow I was no longer casting, and still had my licence.

Back to the drawing board and fortunately "The grey Brick" is not offended.

If you do look at a K12, check the front brake hoses carefully. They have a habit of rupturing next to the brackets on the fork legs because the angles are too tight. The day bloke who bought my K12 came to pick it up the one on the right leg went. He still fronted up the money anyway, but I had to trailer it to the Gold Coast for him.

I have often thought about a newer, faster, flasher bike, but what can it do so much better than what I have now? The old bikes have character and the stand out. How many times have you been asked about your bike by strangers? We get from a to b in reasonable time, perhaps 10 minutes later than a new bike and who really cares? I must agree that that I do enjoy the RT for it's weather protection on a long journey, but in extreme heat the naked basic is the one to have.

All I could think of with the K1200LT was.....how to get the starter or the alternator out....plus the extra weight which I really noticed when I discovered how much lighter the 84 K100Rt felt compared with the 92 K100LT ABS etc.

I tried out the K1100 for 88 and yes it really is nice but for me I would struggle a bit in town.

So, enjoy the new K and glad to see you had the carpet out for her!!!

Both the K100 and the 1100 have very good merits .
good to see you dividing your attention between the two . you will admire both in due time .
well done mate , just one more and the garage should be sweet. maybe a 3/4 could fit in there somewhere.

Funny you should say that but I ran into a man who had;

A 1986 K75C 82000 stored for 10 years $3500
The chap is called Frank and left me his mobile number if anyone is interested...my wife would not be pleased.

I was going to put a fancy photo in....But it could be mint or it could be not.

Frank lives at Mangrove Mountain...just saying
