I had to use cable ties today to attach an old Rickman's top box as I needed to go and pick up my daughter from a friends house!

Went to put her helmet and jacket in to the panniers and they wouldn't fit, well the jacket would, but the helmet (full face) wouldn't!

So now riding around on a lovely K100rs with BMW panniers and a 1970's dirty white top box with a broken lock and bungee cords holding it closed. As much as I love all Rickman's fairing and luggage it just doesn't look right! Might have to invest in a proper bit of kit or find bigger panniers!!!

You can buy a Givi-made mount to fix the rack to the BMW tail hump but it comes with a warning about the amount of weight that a top box should carry. Rick's pic shows the E45 which is big enough to get a single helmet in, but won't fit two. You need an E52 (or similar) for that. Unfortunately Givi don't do a purpose-made kit for mounting panniers on a K but I know from experience that the Universal kit almost does the job. In the end, I made a complete mounting rack for LFB from scratch. Your timing is spot on because I'm about to do the same again for Brick 2 and it will be documented in this thread:

Amazing what Rick packs into them panniers Dave .
Rick are they a blow moulded style of case , or pressed.
I noticed for the first time last weekend , the BMW cases are actually two skins pressed together .

Hi Dai

Take a look at these, I have these and the wingrack brackets including Givipanniers. I had originally thought about fitting to my k1 but the purists would not have approved :-)

We could maybe do a trade or something.

They are single skin and as tough as old boots, oh yeah they don't fall off when the rack gets a tiny bit worn.
Totally waterproof too even when used as an esky (icebox to the unOz).

I think I'm right in saying that BMW did 2 different sizes of panniers that fit the K's. I know this because I have both sizes. One set takes a full face helmet and the other set doesn't, they seem to have larger outer sides. They look almost identical too, it might be worth looking round eBay for a pair.

Good grief! Wingrack 1 fittings! Yes please - I'll have a set of those. I have two Wingrack 1 sets - one is destined for Brick 2 and the other for my Cali 1. You don't have a set of shark fins to go with them, by any chance?

BTW, I'm away Sunday to Saturday (19th - 25th), so please don't treat a lack of reply as ignoring you.

Thanks for all the advice guys!

I think the problem I have with buying a top box is the plate I need to attach it with! The angle of the tail piece means that the box will lean down quite a bit. I'll try and get a picture of what I mean!

I know that there is something out there, because I've seen them! Might have to look in to the bigger touring panniers (might need a pay rise first though). To be honest, I can travel with a wallet and a toothbrush,My daughter on the other hand seem to pack enough for a month just to nip to France for a weekend!! ...Can you bobber a K?????

Depending on your engineering skills and facilities, there are solutions. A kind friend gave me a Givi top box with mounting plate, intended to be horizontal. In simple terms, I cut 4 lengths of 20mm round steel, cut the bottoms at an angle to match the tail piece where the original rack (now removed) was attached. Shorter for close to the seat, longer for further back. These posts finished up vertical from the tail piece, with the tops horizontal to each other.
Drilled and tapped holes in both ends for bolts up through the tail piece and down through the mounting plate. Bob's your uncle.
Sorry, can't include photos as the bike is about 20000km away.
The commercial mounts I have seen also use the mounting bolt positions for the original rack to achieve the same result a different way.

My only issue was that the mounting plate fatigued and cracked, so I reinforced it with a welded on piece. Had I realised that before, I would have added a bit of a platform structure to the tops of the mount posts.

Bill

Thanks Bill,

That all makes perfect sense to me. I will get something sorted and try and post a few pics of what I do. But I will take on your advice about reinforcing bits, I can see how it could start to go with just a light weight!

Cheers Dave

I got one of those for my LT and that is a good price I bought a kit with the mono key plate which I sold off to offset the cost.

They are a good job.

Mine has the bottom rack for the top box rack. It fits straight in the original holes because the RT came with the standard carrier and I just took the other one off the LT and transferred it over. straight fit. Paint finish on it was crap though. If you geta used one strip it and powder coat it.
