I rarely have a pillion on my K, can't remember the last time must have been a few years, always wanted to turn it into solo seat for the cheaper rego, but cost of mod plate permanently removing the rear pegs, single police seat and all, so I never bothered to look into it. Just googled solo reg in Qld and found this, I know it came into effect 2 years ago, but thought I would share it with others that may not be aware, Gary

Just out of curiosity, what is the price difference between a 2up and 1up registration?

Seems as though you could swap in a factory solo (not police) seat or a Corbin Gunfighter and take the rear pegs off.

As I keep a bike rego'd in Queensland and it'll need renewing come October when I'm back, I thought I'd check prices on the QT website. An example I used was a new 12 month rego. Initially I ticked the box for no CTP (Compulsory Third Party insurance), on a four cylinder engine, dual and solo seats, and with an approximate value of $5000...

Both dual and solo machines come up as $348.30 without CTP. With CTP (I chose Suncorp, not that it makes much of a difference to the cost) a solo bike prices at $450.30, a dual rider machine is $638.70, so CTP is what you're saving. All other fees are the same in the breakdown. These prices include duty so if you already own the bike it'd be less by the assessed value amount.

A note on costs as a comparo: in Washington state I keep five of my six bikes registered. I pay about $57 per year on each bike, with an additional cost on full cover insurance. In WA state one doesn't have to have insurance on a motorbike (ridden in state only) at all! I pay less than $300 per year for insurance on the lot. $285 plus $300 doesn't even add up to one dual rider bike rego in Queensland, then substract the dollar to dollar value and we do get hoiked up the bum Down Under.

We are more than "hoiked up the bum Down Under".... we are being totally shafted.

QLD CTP insurance is an 'at fault' insurance scheme. Drivers/riders are not covered unless someone else is at fault. Statistically, about half of accidents are 'no fault' accidents. My guess is that the majority of those would be motorcycle accidents. If a rider and pillion come off on a corner and hit a rock wall, the pillion can claim but the rider cannot. A rider in QLD has to be hit by another vehicle at fault before they can claim. This is currently being reviewed and it's likely QLD CTP premiums will rise by nearly $80 in the near future. Other states in Oz have already changed their CTP schemes to include the driver.

On another note, a news article I saw the other day said that it's been found that around $70 of each ctp premium in Oz goes to pay fraudulent personal injury claims and we all know who those f#@king pr!cks are. NSW gov has set up a CTP task force to investigate.

Hi Duck, I think two wheels answered the question well, all I looked at was the dollar saving, what I now save on bike rego, pays for the trailer I will be towing, I have a Corbin gunfighter seat, its a lot more comfortable ride.
I hope if I remove the rear pegs and fashion a Cowel of some sort over the rear of the seat it should be fine, cheers Gary

Hi
I have mates on the Katana forum who have done what was suggested above, just made a cowel to cover the rear seat and remove the pegs - doesn't have to be permanent. I have a few bikes on single seat rego where the cowl makes it a single seater and the pegs are off. As noted you go from class 13 to class 12 on your CTP which is where you save the cash.
