Hi I'm an new member and a new BMW owner. I have owned several bikes over the years but this is my first BMW. Just purchased a 1985 K100 RT. The previous owner took it apart in 2005 to paint it and didn't get it done. So I purchased it in pieces and just got it out of the paint booth last week. I will post pictures when it is back together.
I also currently own a 1981 Honda CB900F (restored last year) and a 1991 Suzuki DR650 (restored 2 years ago).
I am looking forward riding the K bike with a good buddy of mine who has a K75 and has been after me to buy a K bike for a while.
Look forward to sharing soon.

Hi there welcome to our Knuthaus  Buying a K bike is a great decision. Have a look through the Portal page and go to the so you just bought a BMW, Ted has a good write up and lots of things to check before you ride it.

Welcome to the forum! What a nice buy but some advices from one who has been on the K over 6 years and which hopefully will be mirrored by others here especially if you have the know how and equipment.

While you still have it apart.....

Replace the rear main crankshaft seal. It involves a clutch and flywheel off job. It may be fine but it WILL fail.
Replace the rubber hoses like fuel lines [make the two that connect to the tank at the front about an inch longer], vacuum pipe, crank case vent hose, rubber clutch boot, driveshaft boot. You will have these apart anyway [apart from the rear main seal] so its just a case of getting the bits to have.
Intake rubbers perish and cause problems so check them over well. If old and hard or damaged replace as the bike wont run properly if they are leaking.
Brake master cylinder seals will go down on you too so do them.
Fuel filter but check the mounting inside the tank.
Test and check the gear position indicator [GPI] this is known to fail and replacement is a swingarm off job. Easy while you have it off.
And for certain your oil/water pump will go down too although you could leave this and do it later but then you would be off road a bit.
Check out the throttle mechanism at the bars. This has an internal chain and when its well lubed its fine but if not goes stiff and goes wrong. New lube!
Temperature sensor on radiator, make sure its good and a good electrical connection. This can affect running!!
Pop in a headlight relay......

You don't say what part of 1985 so my question is does your gas tank bolt down? There would be a single bolt hole visible at the back if it does. Your clocks will have a 7 litre orange and 4 litre red fuel warning if tank bolts down. This will tell us more about your bike as there was a change in 1985.

Check out the center stand as it can corrode from inside and collapse under load.

Recently replaced my footrest rubbers with brand new ones and could not believe the difference the new softer rubber made so go for it.

These things pick up age related issues rather than neglect and can be an issue when the bike is unused for a long time, when they are done you end up with an uber reliable machine.

Welcome!

Would it surprise you to know that we will laud your good judgement - and that of your friend for urging you - to buy a K?

I believe once you've had it a while you'll want to buy him a few beers...

Welcome from the Island!  Lots of info here on the forum.  I can honestly say my bike is running because of these people.

I ride through the 'Wack a few times a year so we might be able to link up when you get your RT together.

Neat, we are starting to get more BC members.
Greetings from central B.C.. I was in Chilliwack twice in the last month but they were quick trips.  I flew down and rented four wheels.

And if you didn't know already, Shails is a great motorcycle shop in Langley that specializes in older BMW's.  They worked on my bike a few years ago and knew what they were doing.
