Hi All,

Just a quick one, 1983 K100rs, so therefore it has the hex end on the oil filter, as I was giving her a service I went to change the oil filter and found the socket still on the end of the old one! Is it me or should that not really have been left there? I have now popped it back into the tool box but it's playing on my mind!!

Mate you are not the first to find this phenomenon and likely not the last...in fact one of ours here could not find his removal tool until checking much like you did.
great place to leave it as you cannot lose it there.....now where did I leave my glasses?

Davep, your original post sounds like you are under the impression that the oil filter type with the nut on the bottom is the standard filter for the K100RS.

This is not the case - a few brands such as K&N use the nut but most filters, including the original BMW ones, have the fluted section around the bottom for use with a cup tool for installation and removal. The K100RS uses the same filter as all other K75, K100, K1100 variants.

Plenty of threads on here re filters.

Cheers

Gaz is spot on re filters as there are heaps of different ones in shapes and sizes also. Many of us have found that the Ryco Z418 is a good fit and costs a heap less than imported filters. Just had a read back and yep 418's are an appropriate fitment...wow the engineering rigour that went into that question was amazing....good luck mate.

I'm amazed that the filter cover went back on with a socket stuck to the bottom of the filter.

It will with the OEM filter but many of the replacement filters are a bit longer.
