Hi all. I just bought a 1985 K100RT with 145K km and heavy maintenance records. It's dolomitgrau metallic and has hard bags. It's going to be my "working in Edmonton" bike. I have a 1977 R100/7 that is my summertime bike in British Columbia, along with a 1959 Zündapp Bella 150 (hence the username "germanbikes"). I look forward to learning from the old hands and experts on the forum, as I am sure to need help!

Thanks, all, for the greetings.

The K100 is in Edmonton, where I work. I have an R100/7 on Salt Spring, as well as my Zündapp scooter. But we are moving to Victoria (family reasons) soon, and those bikes will end up being used on Vancouver Island/around town.

Hope to see more Canadians here, esp. on the west coast--

Tomorrow the K100's fuel pump goes back into a cleaned fuel tank with a new pump screen, filter, and hoses. Crud build-up in tank stopped the pump on my ride home from picking it up! It seems to pump fine now, after cleaning.

Hi GB. WelKome to the forum from the Land Downunda.

I had the same problem on my recently purchased '88K100RT bought as a non-runner. Had to replace everything inside the tank and give it a good clean out. The best thing to clean gunk out of a tank that's been sitting for ages is a laundry Oxy cleaner with active ingredient: sodium percarbonate. Like any of your laundry soakers or nappy treatments etc. Mix it fairly strong. 50g/lit of warm water. Let it soak overnite and repeat if necessary.

If the tank was that bad that it stalled the engine then I would suggest you need to pull the injectors and give them a clean also and replace the kit.

Do you have any pics of your rides to post.

Cheers

Washed, finally, and half-way presentable. 200 km so far; used just under 12 litres. Bike cost CDN$1,300 plus $250 in parts and fluids (so far). Needed in-tank hoses, pump screen, thorough tank cleaning, all oils. Next: brake fluid, coolant, splines. Runs like a top!

My RT is now running properly, brake fluid has been changed, and the 'temperature switch' (which includes the fan relay) has been replaced with a new unit from BMW ($$$). Popped the new switch in today and after idling for eight minutes, the fan went on like it is supposed to. So all systems are go. There won't be much more riding this fall in Edmonton, I imagine, so spline lube and coolant flush can wait until the start of riding season in 2017!
