i just picked up a 85 k100 that needs a lot of work but i have always wanted one so now i have one all i need to do is get it running

Welcome to the forum. I suppose Phoenix is a good place to get a K100 back up from the ashes.

On a more serious note do let us know which one you have, particularly as there were changes in 85. The early ones have a bolted down gas tank, the clocks have 2 fuel warning lights, orange at 7 litres and red at 4 litres.

Everyone here is very helpful no matter where they are living and you will get great advice. Don't be afraid to ask questions, we all almost all started with these Ks from scratch so it has been a learning curve and some great chats, meet ups and exchanges along the way. You will get offers for parts etc too and some great stuff around.

Before you try to get it running get at the gas tank and make sure the fuel filter is good and the fuel pump is good. The pump is inside the gas tank and sits in a kind of rubber damper that breaks up in time, especially if the bike has been sitting and the bits get into the filter and pump and wreck them. Arizona should not be so bad for electrical connections but they do get affected by damp and need cleaning. Could be a good idea to start a thread for your K then as questions come up you will have what you need in the one place.

well to be honest i dont know what model it is other than it's a K-100 but i have been spending so much time working on this thing my wife is starting to think i love it more than her !!! LoL !!!
but after cleaning out the fuel tank replacing fuel filter cleaning up all the messed up wiring i started it today it fired right up and smooth as glass
still have a lot of work to do before i put it on the road but it coming along

Wow that's an early one and your VIN number must be very low, probably only last 4 digits as in 000????!.

Just be careful buying parts because a lot of changes in 85. If in doubt don't be afraid to post up a question. We all want to see you get it running well.

you are right about the vin # , when i got it 3 weeks ago i hauled it home in boxes , i still have a lot of wiring to do and i need to get some kind of headlight on her but as of tonight she is running i plan on riding her around the block in the morning , i will try and take some pic's tomorrow and post them wish i would have got some pic's when i first got it home , i got her as a project and to build a striped down bike for around town i have a BMW R1200C for a road bike

If you have all the bits then wiring may not be a problem.

But watch a few things. Clocks have a habit of not working. The plug into the back of them needs cleaning as do the pins on the clocks. They are not interchangeable with later clocks. [later ones will have a single fuel warning light, the early ones have two for 4 litre and 7 litre.

If you have it running now you must have sorted a fair bit. Recheck the electrical connection into the fuel tank too, it can go bad, make sure its good and tight.

Rear disc on early ones was perforated, this was changed to solid due to cracking issues. Cant imagine yours still having the perforated on but just in case.....If yours is perforated keep an eye out for a solid one.

While you are poking at the headlight wiring do yourself a favour and put a relay on headlight. This takes the full current draw away from the switch and saves the contacts from burning out. 

it dose still have the perforated disc in the back , the guy i got it from said that the org. mileage on it was only 16,000 miles but he didnt have any of the org. insterments for it , im not kidding when i said it came home in boxes but thats why i got it so cheep , im going outside and see about getting some pic's right now

The info below is from a post by Crazy Frog (the Forum's esteemed leader) regarding unleaded fuel with early K100's...

Very early K100 really need LEADED fuels. If you do NOT use leaded fuels in these bikes, then do keep an eye on the valve clearances more often than usually done.
BMW modified the bikes so they are OK on UNleaded fuels. The modifications occurred at:
K100: at serial number 0007291
K100RT: at serial number 0024999
K100RS: at serial number 081107

So, from your VIN, you can tell if this is an issue or not for your bike.

Hi Warhammer, welkome to the forum!

From what I can see of your rear disk in the photos it looks to me to be the same drilling pattern as the drilled rear disk on the K1100s. As far as I know the original rear disk that was recalled had the drill pattern as in the first photo below (courtesy of forum member HeikkiL), so your disk if its like the second photo may be fine.

I'm sure some more learned people will confirm or correct me. Lots of members will also advise you to put your VIN number in your signature pane to help experienced forum members help you along the way.
