It might seem early to be posting this.

It's because BAE has floated a possibility of coming over for our Christmas Brunch.

I am mindful of the fact that he will be needing a ferry reservation and these are normally very heavily booked over Christmas and New Year.

As usual our very own Christmas pudding and cream [custard for Cluain Si] will be on the menu along with the usual good company.

Question is what date?

Looks like possible dates are between Tuesday 27 and Friday 30th December.

Stradbally Fayre have never let us down and will happily serve the Christmas puddings we bring along. BAE knows the way there.

JediGril [Magda] will also be around at Christmas and has asked about it too!!!

As usual weather depending car pooling is in order! Hopefully Sgmayhew will be along too.

I'm in, and can probably do most days between the dates suggested.

Will know closer to the day, and hopefully it will be a bike friendly day.

Unless I get snagged by some idiot manager to do Christmas, I think I might actually be in on this one.

I also should be able to go and might also be able to offer BAE a room and a safe place to park.

I thought BAE would bring his tent??

Anyway this is sounding good.

BAE maybe pop up a day that might suit bearing in mind ferries etc. Maybe DAI might get to come up with a date too as it would be nice to have him along as well.

Puddings will be provided.

A very kind thought Simon...definitely a preferable option to a tent!

Olaf, I've been looking at the ferry timetables - Stena does not currently show anything at all beyond 16 Dec, which is not very helpful. Irish Ferries have no service 25/26 Dec and nothing useful on 27 Dec (first ferry arrives too late for lunch). I'll keep watching for timetable updates - but best bet is for you to pick a date between yourselves and, if I can make it over, I will. Could be an interesting ride!

No ferries 25/26 December.

Looks like maybe 28, 29 or 30th December are the more likely dates.

It also depends on Elizabeth's shifts. With her being nursing staff and us having no children, days off over the Christmas break tend to run rockinghorseshit a very close second in the rarity stakes.

As a total shift of topic, does anyone actually know why it's always assumed that couples with no children will always be quite happy to work Christmas? Yeah, you can hear the frustration. Last year was the first Christmas in eight years that Elizabeth had some leave. Guess what? I was working! Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

Still the grumpy old git, Dai.
Christmas decorations in the shops already... grumble, grumble.
Just thought I'd post in this thread to keep up to date with the plans.
Might take a drive down and flexible on dates. Unless I get my annual dose of flu again.

Hopefully the flu wont hit this time.

As for Christmas, I found myself making loads of Christmas puddings in March. I suppose like K riders they need to be matured nicely.

Love to see you for the Christmas Brunch. Maybe let the exact date float a little to see how Dai and BAE work out? Looks like being one of 28/29/30th December though.

OK, so time is marching on...and Stunnaline have now populated their late December timetables.

There's a 25% discount if I book before 16 Oct too (£60 for a 24 hour short stay crossing). So what is the date? I'm potentially looking at 28th Dec Fishguard to Rosslare on the ocracksparrow crossing (so I can take a scenic wintery tour up to Stradbally Fayre) and either the night ferry back from Dublin to Holyhead or, if Ringfad is up for it, a night out in Dublin and take the morning ferry on 29th from Dublin to Holyhead and ride back down through the wilds of Wales in (mostly) daylight. I could probably do something similar 29/30 Dec. Might get harder any closer to New Years Eve.

So...what's the date 28th or 29th (pause for drum roll)????? (my preference would be for 28th, but I'm not calling the shots here and am just gate crashing your party (again!!)).

Cheers Simon, looks like the 28th is looking favourite...I'll give it another day or so before I book my ferry, just in case.
Definitely something for me to look forward to.

Here's hoping for good weather and/or gritted roads.

Right - that's that done...ferry booked.

  • 28 Dec arrive Rosslare 0630 for slow bimble up to Stradbally Fayre for the joyous brunch and Christmas puds
  • 29 Dec depart Dublin 0820 for return home via Holyhead.

Simon, I don't know how far you are from the port, but hopefully I won't be disturbing you too much with my early-ish morning departure - if this is a problem (and please tell me if it is), then it's no problem for me to find alternative accommodation. I'll drop you a PM shortly to get your address/number etc.

Looking forward to catching up with you all on 28th Dec.

I'm out because I'm in the office 'til midnight on the 27th. It's entirely my own fault - we were supposed to nominate our preferred days off over the Christmas week but I was so wrapped up in preparing training courses and testing a new product release that I completely forgot. Consequently I ended up being 'allocated' two working days that week (27th and 29th) instead of the more usual one day. Mad

Cluainsi and company will probably make it on 28th even though that is my 42nd wedding anniversary but we will be at another family celebration and christening on the 27th so it depends on the bodily state for attendance.

Still up for it, and might have a friend or two. Not on a K but both have ridden with us before.

The K and I really need a run, to recharge the battery, and the one on the K as well.

Its been good to watch your plans unfold for this meet up over there in the Emerald Isle. Fond memories for me of the day at Stradbally Fayre last year.

Especially pleased to see that BAE is joining the Eccentrics for the festivities - well done mate!

I'm sure a good time will be had by all, I'll be thinking of you.

Cheers

What????!!!!
affraid

Olaf, squash that evil rumour immediately! There is absolutely nothing wrong with my pudding eating apparatus and actually, I will need extra helpings to... erm, help build up my strength again!

If my hands have stopped working by the time I get to SBF, I really will be in trouble, but perhaps, just in case, you could arrange for some lovely Irish beauties to help me out?! (and no...I don't mean a K1 on Irish plates, beauties for sure but not the caring, sympathetic, pampering sort I'm thinking of).

One week to go. I'm still intent on getting myself over to the gathering. My left hand is still rather weak and feeble but I'm working hard at getting it suitably limbered up in time. I just wish I had gotten round to doing the maintenance I was going to do on the clutch actuating arm needle bearing - typically, Heidi's clutch operation is a little stiffer than Gretels and could use some attention. It didn't bother me before, but I can really feel the difference now.

Whilst I am able to drive again, I haven't been back on the bike since the unfortunate incident. There's no prizes for misplaced bravado - I will make a final decision on 27 Dec on whether I can make the 02:30 ferry on 28th or not.

@Gaz wrote:Especially pleased to see that BAE is joining the Eccentrics for the festivities - well done mate!
Thanks Garry, I'm remaining positive - this trip has been the entire focus of my get well plan and I'm really looking forward to it.

It's not a long trip (suitably broken with a long rest during the 3 hour ferry crossing in the middle) - more akin to the sort of distance you guys ride just to get to an Oz corner shop, so hopefully it will not prove too challenging.

BAE

If you use the M1/Port Tunnel out of Dublin Port and head north as far as the M50 then head west you pass M2 M3 M4 then you take the M7 exit for Limerick/Cork. There is a toll for the tunnel but it will be small in your direction as its targetted for traffic. The M50 has camera tolling so bikes are exempt from that.

Slightly longer but a lot less clutch work and a lot easier than stop starting going through Dublin along the quays that will be packed with mayhem-like post Christmas bargain hunting shoppers. Time wise much the same.

I suppose we can help you eat some puddings, one for you one for me style. Tea spoon for you........

Three large puddings on board for Stradbally Fayre....!!

€3. Don't even consider not using it - it cuts at least thirty minutes off the trip from Dublin Port to Santry (junction with the M50).

Olaf / Dai,

I am a fan of the Dublin tunnel, it has served me well previously...but I will be coming in via Rosslare not Dublin. I will be returning home via Dublin/Holyhead.

Coming back to Wales by ferry means that BAE will be in good hands. From memory the ferry was made in the state of Tasmania, Australia.
