G'day All, seem to be having a lot of clutch/gearbox related issues lately. Pulled the clutch out of the 'good' 75 and found the splines kaput in the driven plate. This also means that the splines on the gearbox input shaft have been damaged. Does anyone out there have a good input shaft for sale?? Please let me know. Thanks Tom

yeah its a shame when they do that ...similar happened to me not so long ago

I hope you have also solved the rumble from the gearbox - drive shaft when this all goes forward ...perhaps new bearings in the gearbox ?

You've certainly been clocking the hours up on those Ks of yours Tom. You should be able to R&R the back end of a K in your sleep by now. Good luck with it mate. Cheers

Thanks for reply Charlie and Nigel. I have (just about) all necessary clutch bits to hand so installation of clutch will soon be complete. I may fit the spare gearbox and if that works out to be OK, will install the input shaft ( on the way now) into the original gearbox as well as replacing all bearings and seals. This will get the bike on the road a bit sooner. This whole issue is giving me nightmares and I may be edging closer to giving up on the Ks. Cheers Tom

just thought to post a pic of my noisy bevel box

I should have done it before .

the main bearing once cleaned of oil is quite noisy .when taking just the weight of the output shaft ,   and you can see the scoring on the bearing surface of the other end

I'm just pulling it apart for inspection before the Karuah run as the seal on the output (the big one ) is still weeping

I'm going to re-linish the running surface and shove it all back together  and relocate the seal , till I can afford replacement bearings,  as there is likely a tiny bit of movement

reminder this bevel box sat for really long time before I got it , and suspect that there may have been some  corrosion - pitting on the bearing race faces

 

Hi Charlie, thanks for that info on the bearing. I haven't done a thing to mine yet. I have just fitted the one I got from Rick. I'm still in the process of fitting the Gearbox to my 75 after all the clutch issues. May have it going this weekend. My mechanical skills are a bit lacking. Might see you at Karuah. Cheers Tom

G'day All, just a quick update on the 75. Fitted a new clutch assembly, another driveshaft and a replacement final drive. Replaced the g/box input shaft and input shaft seal. Had difficulty mating the g/box to the engine even after using the alignment tool and an old input shaft with push rod. Tried a few times without success. The F800GT and the Honda VFR800X were starting to look pretty good.
Smithy came down last weekend and said 'let's have a look at that gearbox'. He took off the box, loosened the clutch cover bolts, realigned the clutch plate and bingo. The problem was that the push rod did not quite line up even after using the tool.
The 75 is now going great and thoughts of another bike have all but disappeared.
The next thing to do is repair the original FD

Great result Tom - that was a good job to take on and it was really useful for you to share your experience. 

Many lessons learnt too - particularly that (on these older bikes) it is often not just one problem, but a combination of wear in several components that present the symptoms - if you fix just one problem, the others often rise to the surface in a most frustrating way. Excellent help from Smithy too - nothing beats a little hands on experience and encouragement from someone that has done the job before to make that final little tweak that makes all the difference.

Enjoy the ride (when it's cool enough to enjoy) - you've learnt it.
