Greetings Brick Experts!

I've got 1987 K100RS w/90,000 miles on the clock. I'd like to replace the keyed ignition switch with a simple non-BMW switch. Read on another forum awhile back that this can be accomplished by simply tying together the two gray wires, then adding a simple switch between the red and green wires. The result is a lose of the parking lights which I never use anyway.

Has anyone done this and is it not detrimental to the rest of the circuitry???

Thanks all I enjoy the forum,

Gee

Thanks for the reply, like many old K owners, I have to do most all of my own wrenching (no shops near me) and am always looking for suitable less expensive options......

The first time I did it I attached the two spare lighting wires together. The second time I bought a whole ignition switch from ebay China that had two contacts, did a bit of soldering and had it working as the original did.

Here you can see the ignition barrel on the right hand side of the picture next to the power socket and above the voltmeter.

Completed installation of a semi-temporary toggle switch between the red and green wires, mounted to an accessory plug bracket on the factory coil cover. Cut off the factory switch plug and spliced into it's cable. Also tied together the two gray wires.......all worked well as suggested. Future plans are to fabricate a better bracket and install an after-market key switch.

Thanks for the advice!
