I've got a cap with a faulty mechanism.  Its stuck in a 'locked' position (although the cap is open).  Ive seen tutorials on how to fix the fuel caps but they all had screws where I seem to have rivets.  I can't find a way into this thing to see what's going on, any ideas?  Is it fixable?

Supposedly its an 85 K100 RS.  It was given to me for free but in pretty rough shape.

Essentially there are 2 types of cap and your bike is on the change over time and also being 30 years old anything can have been done.
The early type had a square push button in the centre and the later type has just a key and cant be left closed without being locked.
Most of the guys post the frame number or VIN in the signature line to save typing it over each time.
Sounds to me that the screws may have been damaged and rivets used in place.
Put a pic up if possible as it is easier to see than describe.

Here's a shot of it. It's likely those rivets may once have been screws.

Well I am in the same boat as Shep I have never seen one like that. I would try to get a good later model with a key and use that for a paper weight. That rivet looks to me like it is part of the original and if it is the original alloy then it is not very fixable.

This is what my 86 RS' fuel cap looks like...the black plastic/rubber seal on the left sits on top of the steel piece and acts as a seal or the fuel tank.

My 1985 K100RT also has the riveted cap as VashonK100 does.  Even though my cap is working ok today, I would like to add the drilled hole modification, just incase my cap fails sometime when I am on the road.   So, the question is has anyone come up with a similar modification for the riveted cap??  Currently on my cap, the gaskets are all good and lock works fine.  I rarely lock mine but occasionally when I push the cap release button down, to open the cap, it is difficult to get it to release.  It is like the two spring loaded prongs don't pull back far enough to release the cap.   It looks like I could file the tips of the two prongs off just slightly, which might make it easier to release.

To be quite honest I would advise getting the later model cap and keeping that one for the sake of being original if you sell and you also have the cap on backwards, the hinge should be at the rear so that little hole at 3 o'clock is at 9 o'clock then water that gathers will drain away instead of into the tank.
It's amazing the cap has lasted this long most have thrown in the towel long ago.

Thanks for spotting the cap being backward.  I bought this 85 K100RT last year and the guy said he had replaced the fuel filter so that is probably when it went on backwards.  The reason I had removed the fuel cap was to check the filter and hoses as mine was having poor throttle response off of idle.  The hoses were very checked / cracked so they definitely could of had some leaks, and the filter was nearly plugged.  Also, the fuel filter vibration damper gasket was turning to goo so it is getting a new one.  I cleaned the cap, lubed the latch mechanism, ordered a new seal gasket, gasket between tank and cap.  The cap release button works good now.  Thanks

In your picture the fuel cap is mounted the correct way.
