Air filter change made easy? How do you change the air filter on an 80s k100rt without wanting to throw stuff long distances?

Is it the removal of fairing sections that's disturbing you or is it compulsion control in general that's the challenge? Smile  The replacement itself is straightforward.

Bloody hell mate! I almost had it! I was thinking the top of the airbox had to come off but almost had the filter out when I gave up and asked! THANKS!

Sniper, the video above is good.  But it doesn't show the incredibly frustrating thing I experienced when I did this.  It's been a few years now, but my recollection is that there's a lip or recess on the side of the filter that is towards the throttle bodies that hangs up when you try to pull the filter out.  But you can' t see it, so it seems to just get stuck there.  So you have to move the top half of the air box up a bit (that is shown on the video, but they don't say why), then pull the filter up on all 4 sides before pulling it out.  Hope that helps.  Good luck!

This is what I am thinking about the poor design of the BMW K-bike air filter. If the canister was a 1/4" lower, it wouldn't be any problem.
(Try to replace the Mass Airflow Sensor and be ready for even more frustration.)

If it were that much lower it would been only two minutes of my life instead of three minutes that I'd have lost every time I replaced that filter.  O, the things I could have done with that extra time; the regrets I would not have. Air filter change made easy? 177381

Thanks all! I almost got in the Guinness book of world records for spanner throw due to a bit of frustration.

A pair of long-nose (snipe-nose) pliers is a must to replace that bloody inner clip.

CF: replacing the MAF is easy-peasy. You just need to hack through the cable on the left-hand side just in front of the airbox and fit a four-pin connector in there. mech Air filter change made easy? 212902

Or in my case, Air filter change made hard! The previous owner had somehow put it in backwards, with the higher lip that should have been on the right instead being on the left.

Even more worthy of throwing spanners.

(Not on BOB the Blue Old Bike, so RT was not the culprit)

I am so very grateful that the designers chose a damn filter that only needs to be changed every 50,000 miles.

Throw spanners?

I just yell at it.

Quite satisfying really. Upsets the neighbours no end. And the wife. And the kids.

Don't have to go looking for spanners either.

When I changed the airfilter on my K100 not long after I got it I noticed a PO had marked it April 1998, so it had only been there 17 years at that time. Maybe a bit more often would be a good thing. Very Happy

I took my last one out a few weeks ago at about 18,000 miles. It was in a bad way. I have diligently ensured the air duct out to the front of the radiator panel is correctly connected up and figure a lot of crap comes in that way too.
