Well, that was an interesting ride to work this morning!

It had been very stormy overnight; this morning the rain was still lashing down and wind was still a howling (beautiful summer weather!). As I snaked through a sweeping double bend at about 50mph, I was alert to the possibility of there being leaves and branches down on the road, but I wasn't expecting a sizeable branch in full leaf to suddenly drop right on top of me and hit the front of Heidi. A few micro seconds earlier and it would have hit the road immediately in front of me and possibly taken me off as the front wheel hit it; a few micro seconds later and it would have smacked me right in the face. As it was, it hit the bike just beneath the headlight and broke up around me as it hit the cold hard steel of the fork stanchions. Not appearing to be any the worse for the experience I rode on to work without stopping (it is not a good section of road to stop on - especially at 05:35 on a gloomy rainy morning - narrow and fast, regularly used by some heavy trucks and even more sleepy commuters).

When I got to work, a quick inspection for damage, revealed that the branch had taken out my camera mounted under the headlight. The camera (Garmin Virbe Elite) was mounted in a dive housing (extra weather protection), but the impact had smashed the front of the housing and then torn it off the fairing (3M adhesive mount). The housing was further secured to the bike with a short length of elastic, so was retained and left dangling above the front mudguard but, with the front of the housing broken off, the camera, unfortunately was no longer secured and had dropped out. Bugger! That meant it was now about 33 miles south of me and probably gone for ever. I cursed myself for not stopping sooner.

Ever the optimist, on my ride home, I found a safe place to pull off the road and walked back to where the branch had got me 11 hours earlier. In all the leaf and crushed stick debris that still littered the side of the road, I found some remains of the front of the dive housing, but no sign of the camera. I kind of expected that, after all, it was a bit of a long shot. Just as I was about to give up, I looked across to the other side of the road and there was my camera sitting on the tarmac, plain as day, on the edge of the road! Amazingly, after being swiped off by the branch, it had bounced and skidded across to the far side of the road and then, had sat there for 11 hours during which time it had not been run over or picked up by somebody. OK, so it was a little battered and the battery had run flat (only good for 2-3 hours recording), but it still works! Regrettably, I hadn't erased the SD card prior to the journey and it had actually stopped recording (card full) just 30 seconds or so before the incident. That was very disappointing - it could have been an interesting bit of footage!

However, all in all a very lucky escape - the day could have gone far far worse.

Wow Paul! These last few months you have certainly been "living dangerously" albeit not by your own choosing.

Glad you're OK.

Cheers.

Hi Paul I am glad to here all is good. I was also driving yesterday from Inverness via Culloden and Loch Ness to John O'Groats and wind and rain battered us the whole way. Not many trees luckily for us. To cap it all out trip to the Orkney's has been cancelled as it is to rough for the boat. At least we have some extra time to dry out.

Nice near miss! Shocked Very Happy I got a bit showered by small branches (read: more like big twigs) on the way home last night but it really put me on the alert for the big stuff. Nothing, fortunately.

Thanks for the comments - I certainly don't try to live dangerously, but am far happier to share a near miss story than another bike down one. Just goes to show how quickly things can happen, no matter how alert and sensible you're trying to be.

Sorry to hear that your Scotland tour is being impacted by the weather Simon. Some lovely twisty riding roads around Loch Ness and further north, but as you'll know, there is little shelter and you are at the mercy of the weather once into Caithness. Real pity about the Orkney ferry being cancelled - I have some good times in Orkney (back in my scuba diving days diving the WW1 wrecks in Scapa Flow).

I did manage a Scapa Whisky last night. The closest I will get to Orkney this trip.

The weather has improved so we are leaving early tomorrow from John O'Groats heading for the Isle of Skye.

Glad you got the camera back Paul, that's a great bit of kit. You certainly have had your share of (mis)adventure of late. Hopefully that's it for a long time.

Glad you survived the near miss without too much damage and injury. Paul, you just have to stop riding on the dark side. Pleased also that you managed to retrieve the camera. Cheers Tom

Glad to hear you are ok Paul,

Just goes to show how things can change very quickly on two wheels.

High wind is the only reason to keep me off the bike.

You have been in the wars recently, hopefully calmer waters are on the horizon for you.

Bob
