I need new rear pads for the '88 KRS and looking on eBay there are so many different price points.  Thought I'd just get an entirely new set front and rear.  Some are selling for under $14 shipped for all three calipers!  Some are over $100 for all three.  So where's the middle ground?  The $14 ones are 'semi-sintered'...

$14 for semi sinterd, they will be garbage. I try to buy a brand name at a good price. Sintered pads will wear the disc and organic will wear the pads. I usually go for the organic due to the price of new discs. Sintered pads are also filthy things they leave a black powder residue on the wheels that is really bad news to clean off.

Rick what brand pads are you using, I have a set of new EBC fully floating discs that are waiting to be installed. I've chopped out two sets of Metal Gear discs one with a set of EBC organic, and the next set with a set recommended by Metal Gear their brand. I switched to SBS when they started to tramline. I emailed EBC when I bought the new discs and they said to run EBC organic. Before the two sets of Metal Gear I ran a set of EBC and they chopped out, the Ebc rep said they now make the discs out of hardened steel. Interested to see what other Ozzies run.

For what it's worth I have been running Volar Kevlar/organic pads from D2Moto(an eBay seller) on my three bricks for a total of over 40,000 miles with no problems.  One set now has just over 25,000 on them and will be changed this fall.  My bikes are used a lot on expressways for commuting and long distance touring.

Only issue is that they need anti-squeal on the back to quiet them down on low speed stops.  Otherwise, I am very happy with them.

I've never had any issues running EBC organics on BMW OEM rotors.

If you get cheap pads then you have no idea how quickly they wear so it would be advisable to check their thickness fairly often.

Every rear brake I've ever done has needed anti-squeal on the pads. I think it's a caliper issue, not a pad issue.

And for those who don't know, brake squeal is caused by high frequency vibrations between the piston calipers and the backs of the pads.

I agree with that but it ended up being as easy to pull the pads out and clean up the calipers etc.

Pins seem to suffer with corrosion and if not smooth they stop the pads floating freely, pads ended up stuck at one point so they wore at an angle. Now I just clean the pins every few weeks and make sure its all doing as it should. I have spare pins so its very easy to swap them on the day and clean them in my own time.

I just use organic pads and they seem to work out fine.

From what I recall they were EBC. I bought a set for both K75 and K1100 at the same time and the K75 are definitely EBC

Martin, I have always run EBC organic on my K75 and K1100 on the OEM disks and they seem OK.

I have very recently replaced the front disks on the K1100 (which were original and did 163,000km) with new EBC floating disks and the warranty for them required that I install new EBC pads with them, which I did. Still bedding them in so haven't hit them hard yet.
