Can anyone tell me the length of the shaft on the later 19 tooth oil pump shaft (pre 01/1990) that has a bolt fix for the water section impeller. Mine is the earlier version with a nut to hold on the water pump impeller. Unfortunately when dismantling the pump the threaded section snapped. A replacement shaft is £138 (OMG) from MotoBins which is a lot of money to me. I would like to repair my broken shaft by converting it to a bolt fix version by removing the threaded section and drilling and tapping the shaft to accept a bolt. The shaft length on my nut fix shaft is 48mm from cog face to the end of the shaft not including the threaded section.

Can you Google around and find a picture to show exactly what dimension you're looking for?

I've got a few old WPs on hand and can measure whatever you'd like.

Hi duck
I thought I had attached an image but it hasn't shown on the post. I'll try again.

it is the length of the long shaft from cogwheel face to the end of the shaft
PS this is not my shaft

I don't have any super accurate way to measure it but holding my digital caliper up to it it looks to be about 49mm

Oil pump shaft dimension Dsc01210

Thanks duck.......I measured my version 1 shaft at 48mm with a steel rule and poor eyesight so between us we're not far out.

Duck........Could I ask a favour from you? Could you tell me the depth of  the bolt hole inside the shaft?

Should be the same because the old and new shafts accepted the same cast impeller and also the new version of the pressed steel impeller.
If you want to drill and tap that hardened shaft you are going to need some very fancy gear.
I have heard the shaft will press out of the gear and a stainless shaft made to replace it but so far I have only heard of one person doing it and I cant find him. Was supposed to be an engineering shop in Melbourne Australia

Timo27 thanks for that:thumb:

RickG......I don't have the facilities to drill and tap it myself, I would be using an engineering machine shop to do the work. Pressing out the shaft and replacing it is an interesting option, but maybe the machining costs will end up the same as buying a new shaft. Decisions, decisions

I looked into making a shaft and the new gear from Motobins was a better deal in that it only took a few days to get it to Oz.
Making a one off shaft like that is expensive.

When trying to figure out bolt hole depth on these bikes you can always look at the parts fiche since it just about always tells you what the bolt diameter and length is.  It's probably safe to assume that the hole is a bit longer than the bolt it accepts. (Less the thickness of what is attached by said bolt.)

On a pump that I have dismantled here, the hole depth in the shaft is 24mm, and the thread starts 9mm down. The threaded section of the bolt is 22mm long.
