Having just got my 100RT through its MOT test, after having lain uncared and unloved for two years on someone's driveway, I was smugly riding it home when the indicator started playing up. When I now turn on the right hand indicator, the hazard warning lights come on. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? I have checked the fuses and taken off the RHS handle and cleaned it up as it was very dirty. The brake fluid from the hand brake reservoir had been leaking and gone into the handle; could this be the problem? Everything else is working well.

Bike running really well although low on power so that will be my next task to address.

Many thanks.

I had the same recently and had to replace the flasher relay. Dependent on the mileage it might be beneficial to clean the starter motor first.

It's not good that you got brake fluid on the contacts, be careful so it don't
follow the wires back to the relay and contaminate your blinker fluid.

About the blinker fluid, do you know the last time it was changed.....this is
also a known problem source......when it gets to old.

You can buy it rather cheap here.

If you have changed your blinker fluid recently, we have to look elsewhere.

Your problem could be caused by a malfunctioning load shed relay or a bad #7 fuse.
Rene mentions starter motor cleaning.....the LSR coil is grounded through the
starter relay brushes and commutator, to clean the commutator use a eraser.
Change the brush(es) if they getting close to the service limit.

Typical symptom if the LSR coil don't have a good ground connection:
4-way flash when using the flasher to one side, flickering headlight when driving
and the horns doesn't function properly (when driving).

If you have the above symptoms, but not the headlight flickering......the problem
is fuse #7 or its related circuit.

That in itself is a serious problem you need to sort out. It will most probably be the O-ring on the bottom of the reservoir. Costs about AU$5
RealOEM.com
#20  O-ring  Part No. 32721242624

You'll need to bleed the system after replacing the O-ring so probably a good idea to check the whole system and if the old girl has been sitting for two years then the brake fluid will need replacing completely. It will most like have moisure in the fluid

DON'T GET BRAKE FLUID ON YOUR PAINT WORK!! Have a wet rag or spray bottle handy so you can clean up immediately.

Re: the blinkers/hazzards. Both blinker switches and hazzard switch go directly to the flasher relay, so I suspect that. But, the other side of the switches go to earth so it would be a good idea to check your earth connections as this can cause odd behaviour. There's one on the R/H control assembly on the handlebar and if you have a lot of fuid around this may not be making proper contact (you say that it's only the R/H blinker sw. that does this so there may be your problem). The main earth is under the tank, L/H side of the main spar. Undo that completely and clean and deoxidise. Just my suggestions.

Cheers

I knew I was gullable but this takes the cake.

I actually checked out that "blinker fluid" link while trying to get my head round it!

I will never read an Inge post again!

Indicator brings on hazard lights 44271  Excellent! Good one IngeK.

I wonder if BMW sell a blinkometer to automatically record the number of blinks so that you know when to change the fluid (recommended every 150,000 blinks).

On a serious note, perhaps this is why so many car drivers do not indicate - I always thought it was to stop their battery running out, now I think I know better!

Nah, that isn't necessery, after  ~160.000 the relay starts to be very sluggish and jumps over every third blink  scratch .

Can the blinker fluid be used for both left and right sides or is it specific maybe for either front or back flashers?

It is available in synthetic, cost at least twice as much but does the same thing.

I believe it can be used interchangeably between right and left. Just need to be careful that you get the correct amber colour fluid if you want to use it front and rear.

Many cars in the USA have indicators that flash red at the rear - that would cause confusion if you put the red blinker fluid in the front of your bike. Emergency vehicles also are able to order blue blinker fluid, but I think that is only available for special order.

Gee... you wouldn't want to get those fluids mixed up. Your blinkers could turn green if you weren't careful.

Thanks to all for your replies, even the indicator fluid ones, as problem now fixed. Totally dismantled the right hand side and cleaned all the fluid off and got a hair dryer to the places I couldn't reach. I've also replaced the reservoir O ring and everything is now fine, although haven't used in anger yet but indicator is blinking now as it should do. Best get the bike out where it belongs now.......

This version appears to be well priced and receiving good reviews as well.

Should be enough for a complete flush of the system.

They all have the hazard light function, Helen; you just need the switch and cable to plug into the wiring loom.
