Any body know recommended oils for engine/ gear box/ final drive for the K11??

Jesus Reg....don't start the oil discussion again. 
I'm using Total 15w 40 in the engine because it's what I had to hand. Bricks aren't known for Oil related failure SF or SH spec
Hypoid Gear oil API class GL-5 SAE 80w/90 for the Gear box and FD.

With a bit of molyslip in the gearbox and FD 
. IIRC there was something not quite right with the SG grade oil spec for the Brick.

GB/FD Oil: Nulon Synthetic 75W90
BMW do recommend synthetic engine oil and I think issues like sprag clutch problems are caused by using a mineral oil with low detergent.

I have used Shell HX5 in everything I owned for more years than I can remember, it's always been good but there are many other oils out there that are just as good and far better than what was available 20 to 30 years ago when these contraptions were made.
You can use synthetic and increase the intervals between changes. I have just serviced the K1100 and have put synthetic Nulon in the transmission and drive. It very definately changes smoother especially on the down change.

I guess something to do with the 'aye me hearties' lads landing the rum US side with less than the loaded amount and saying 'it evaporated through the oak barrels' while singing 'What will we do with the Drunken Sailor'.
They didn't worry about oils or tyres........
When we were in France last year Bob put somebaking powder .....Molybdenum disulfide........ ....powder in the bikes too. Its good stuff.

I use these synthetic grades in all my 8 and 16 valve K's without any issues. My K100 track bike has been mercilessly thrashed on track days often up to the rev limiter and all's well. Gearbox and final drive also good.Kaptain Holister wrote:Aww no!! Not another oil thread.... Someone had to say it

No, it went in gearbox and final drive....
I made the mistake of using Honda Moly 60 as an assembly lube when I did my cylinder head. After an hour or so of run time the sprag stopped working. I had to do a backspin to get the engine started with a full can of Seafoam, let it run for a half hour and did an oil change to get the moly out.

The Nulon Full Synthetic engine oil I use comes with moly already in it (Molybdenum Dithiocarbamate).

I would recommend 20W50 this is better for hot temperatures, I don't think anybody will use the bike -20Celsius
GB/FD Oil: Nulon Synthetic 75W90
this is the 30Years old BMW recommend oil, the modern equivalent would be SAE 75W-140 API GL-5

Well everyday is a school day, thats religion, Politics and oils, not to be discussed..
well i ended up getting.....
A bottle of engine slippy stuff,
2 bottles of gear stuff,
1 new box full of sparks,
and some coloured stuff to keep it cool..
and stopped of for a pint of blackstuff on the way home..

Need to watch that black stuff. It can burn the exhaust valve and tailpipe if you run it too rich.

Last Saturday week I wandered over to the local Honda dealer, happily located beside the local BMW dealer......
Parked outside the showroom was a rather nice K75 with a sprint fairing....so I eyed it up to see it was shod with Bridgestones....BT45 front and rear. Just like mine!
Tyres are an emotional subject. Sometimes even over inflated. Does this need a new tread?

I'd agree Choco, its maybe a little low in viscosity but the K is an over engineered machine with fine tolerances, polished contact surfaces, hardchromed crankshaft journals and nickasil bore linings etc. From what I've read it can handle a quality modified synthetic 10W40. Just my opinion. She's due for a change now and I'll be using same oil but in a 15W50

Bearings would suffer due to reduced oil flow imo. 75W90 is the correct oil to use
BMW do recommend synthetic engine oil and I think issues like sprag clutch problems are caused by using a mineral oil with low detergent.

20W50, 10W50 or 10W50 is a question of temperature where we live. In the end they are all OK

I think you are getting worried about the 75w, its the base oil used to flow around the gearbox, the index is the capacity to handle pressure, that is its capable of acting like 90weight in the heat of battle, so if the new stuff is indexed to be capable of handling the heat of battle all the way to 140, its nice but still going to flow like a 75 weight, just wont shrink form battle up till 140.

In my dry clutch Beemers I use Castrol (or other when Castrol's not available) full synthetic 75W140 in the gearbox and final drive, have for years. It takes the heat from the catalyst, where equipped, doesn't leak out past seals and I've never had the dreaded final drive big bearing failure - knock on wood.
In the engines of those same bikes I use cheap and plentiful (about US$5 per quart) Mobil 1 full synthetic 15W50 year round. My very high mileage R1150RT doesn't burn a drop between oil changes when on roadtrips and about half a litre between changes in mainly stop 'n' go city or peak hour traffic during the heat of Summertime.

- I have never been formally introduced previously to the benefits of adding Molybdenum Disulphide to geared drives, but sounds like a miracle product! Why isn't it a standard additive for final drive oils is the question (niche market!).
Canadian Tire has tubes of high pressure grease with 'some' MoS2 in it (how much doesn't say) and it was on sale. But the thought of shooting grease into my gearbox/final drive didn't really seem like a good idea so I gave that a pass. But I found this on eBay and it appears to be just straight Mo. Will this work? It's an awfully decent price I'm thinking... Here's a pic of the item description, any and all inputs welcomed

I'm not sure about using that straight molybdenum powder, especially since the particle size sounds too large.
The stuff I use is Molybdenum disulfide in a 1.5 micron particle size.

The micronised graphit used to be the fashion some years ago. Miracle product!
And it is indeed...in dry conditions. It's a miracle lubricant in locks, for example. Many garages used this powder in engines and transmission, with evident benefits at short term. Lubricant brands even sold oil with graphite (Antar molygraphite) .But at long terms, the graphit was pumping oil, making sort of pasta that stucks the oil conducts in engines, which failed.
An old mechanic impressed me with that sorcecer's magical powder. "Just add a small glass in your gearbox, you'll see, it will make it smooth and silent". And it dit.
But 2000 km later, it became worst than before, hard and noisy, all the seals were leaking. Hey, it's a super lubricant, so it even leads oil through the lips of the seals...(it depends a lot of the material of the seal)
When I opened my gear box to change the seals, not a single drop of oil could be drained. Removing the cover, I discovered that the powder had mixed with the oil and was plastered on the gearbox carter, but no oil was remaining at the bottom nor on the shafts.
Sorry, but there's no miracles in mechanics. Simply stick with the manual guide, you'll avoid problems.

I used the powder in the oil on my, Wills (88), and Olafs gearboxes. About a teaspoon in the gear oil. It used to be uses in engine oil on this side of the Atlantic, it was called Molycote or Liquid Moly oil, and a few other trade names. When you put it in the gearbox, you can feel the difference within 100 kms.
It is not acidic and will not affect any components inside the gearbox. It is a great lubricant for anything under pressure, such as gears.
We used it in the aviation industry for many different things.
It is no longer used in engine oils, because modern fully synthetic oils are so good that they need nothing else.

So why not a 10w-30 vs. 10w-40 or 20w-50? Most cars are running 0w and 5w synthetic these days and are fully capable of 200,000 if maintained? The K engines aren't running any hotter than the car engines?

They're not running hotter, but the viscosity depends of the oil pump capacity and the lubrication system.
It's not designed for a fluid oil, you won't reach the minimal oil pressure using a 10w30 and your engine won't like it.
There's no advantage for using a low viscosity index -below 20w50- unless you're riding under -10°Celsius (15°F). Who does?

Oh yes there is an advantage. I use Nulon synthetic 10w50 which has a moly additive.
LiquiMoly and Molycote products are available in Oz as far as I know.
