Hey guys, 

I need to strip the paint of my tank before I paint it and was just wondering whether or not to take the BMW badges off of just put masking tape over them? I think they are stuck on so if I took them off what kind of glue would I have to use to put them back on?

They are stuck on with a neoprene based glue. Acetone (nail varnish remover) gets the old glue off, but the badges are quite thin and are easily damaged. New ones are available for very little money on ebay.

So would you advise keeping them on to paint but just cover them? or get them off even if I damage them and buy new ones?

You need to do what you feel comfortable with. I would order some new ones, measure the diameter to get the correct size, and take them off. If you try and leave them on then the final job is never going to be perfect, and you would probably hate it if you had done all that work and it was not quite correct.

Use some dental floss under them that will get them off without damage and then double sided tape (automotive stuff) to stick them back on
If they are a bit damaged just peel them off but you will never get a paint job worth having if you mask them.

The badge diameter is 70mm and BMW has doubled the price in the past three years to nearly $30US each.  They are being sold on eBay for much less as 70mm wheel badges for BMW automobiles.

Yeah I read about that method I'll probably go with that let you all know how it goes! if it goes wrong I don't care about the paint because I'm doing a new paint job anyway or the badge as I can buy one so its not the end of the world. Thanks

Hi Rick,

If you warm the emblem up with a hairdryer then use the dental floss or some fine wire will do the job they come off very easily. You definitely want to remove them.

They are pretty reasonable to buy new but I would save them if in good nick.

Update:

Used boiling water and a sponge to water board the emblems which seemed to work, but they were already beat up so i'll probably buy a new set.
