I managed to find a set of Type 3 for $80.00 AU for a mate of Gumtree, he got them for $60.00. They are in pretty good condition and with a bit of sanding and buffing would look as good as new.  These panniers are going on his 1994 R100 with metal tubular pannier frames, and the panniers are the same as the Bricks. However on one of the panniers the latch that holds the pannier to the frame is worn and he reckons it moves around to much, and could possibly come loose. He brought it into work yesterday and it is definitely worn and the retaining rivets are loose.

I am hoping that replacing the rivets may tighten them enough. If not the only solutions I can come up with at the moment is to pack out the frame where the latch hooks on. And I've had a look at mine and it might also be possible to build them up with JB weld if I can manage to get into them. Has anyone managed to pull the latch apart, and managed to tighten them up, if so how? If any Ozinians have an good Type 3 latch of a destroyed set of panniers send me a PM. He is coming around on Monday so I can have a look at them, hopefully by then I might have found a cure.
Regards Martin.

They all do that. Smile

A number of ingenious solutions for securing cases can be found on the site. I just Gorilla-taped the cowl section above the case's mounting rail to protect the paint then jammed a length of 25mm heater hose into the space between the case and the cowl. That stabilized it for me satisfactorily.

There are supposed to be rubber inserts in the tips of the frame latch hooks that help them apply a bit more tension on the frames when the case is closed but they fall out. Suitable substitutes can be fabricated from a small, block eraser or some such.

When I couldn't force slightly larger rivets through the worn latch and case mounting holes, I drilled them to accept some when the old ones loosened. That also worked acceptably.

If I'm thinking what your thinking, then have a look at post number 4 on this link.

I've done the same as Charlie (stuck on rubber bits to "pack out" the mounting frame) and it works a treat.

Just went out and had a look at my bike and the panniers were a little loose. I replaced the worn rubber pad on the back of the panniers with a piece of insertion rubber and added another small piece to the catch. Lo and behold my panniers are now firm. So I'll apply this solution to my mates boxer on Monday. Thanks guys. Type 3 Pannier Latch Repair. 723598

Mate turned up yesterday with one pannier no bike. I ended up fitting the pannier to my bike, but I've come to the conclusion it needs to be replaced. One of the panniers he is replacing is a Type 3 the other is a Type 2 and the reason for replacement. The retaining catch on the new one when locked sits back a 30 deg angle and does not engage the frame.

I suggested that he remove the latch from his old Type 3 and use it on his new pannier. With the faulty one removed I will have a better chance of seeing if it can disassembled and repaired. I did glue a piece of insertion rubber on the back of the pannier which should firm it up when the catch is replaced. and gave him a large piece of insertion rubber for future repairs.

As a weird aside he turned up with his panniers locked and no key. My key fitted, a few years ago due to loosing one tumbler I replaced all my pannier locks with a set from either Motorworks or Motobins. And lo and behold my original key fitted. So is this happening twice a coincidence or are they all keyed the same.
Regards Martin.

Fine for those who have the luxury of keys for their type 1 panniers. Smile  I do put a strap around them to ensure they don't spring open or jump off the bike, though.
When someone (TWB?) mentioned giving away type 1 keys, I looked at my locks and couldn't find anywhere an indication of what number key would fit.

Many thanks, Inge. I was looking closer to the actual lock barrel.  Smile

it seems that there is a fairly limited coding sequence on ignition keys , to start with . at a local meet of the "crew" many found cross keying ability
also remember than many dealers will just file the coding  wafers of the pannier locks  to suit the owners key , leaving a far less range of codes on top of that ...so  I'm not surprised by your experiences

no, they are not all keyed the same but diminishing code variation does seem quite probable

hope that helps
