I've been looking around the K100 Forum to find a thread for after market exhausts for K100's but didn't find much. I want to get rid of the whirly sounding exhaust from a K100 and have more of an S1000RR sound. I know that they are both inline 4's and are both 4 stroke however I also know that they might have different timings making different sounds, but theoretically if the right aftermarket exhaust was selected would it be possible to get my K bike sounding like a BMW S1000RR?? If so which aftermarket exhaust. Im not too worried about noise level or emissions or performance effects.

You could buy a £900 Akrapovic exhaust, or you could select from one of the manufacturers of these noisemakers. Smile

There are a lot of sound clips on youtube.  Especially from cafe4racer.  That would be your best bet.

I ended going up with their right side thunder slash which is much more raw sounding, but I wanted my exhaust on the other side to show off the floating wheel.

Wow....my K100s cost me less than that........and they came with exhausts. Not just any exhausts either, but genuine BMW ones.

Not too long ago I got offered a 29 litre K petrol tank for the RT, from the US.....then added cost of shipping, import tax, VAT, painting etc and it added up to a huge amount or money. So I decided to buy a prepainted 22 litre tank instead, but it came with a complete K1100LT attached to it and some spares like new tyre, brake pads, Clymer and spare wheel hanging off the end of it.

Even better, it cracked a header and now sounds like a Harley. No £900 spent for that.

As for the S100RR, my brother has one I can ride anytime I feel the urge. So far I haven't felt the urge.

But....I do love some of those accessories out here.....

So to sum it up Olaf, did the bigger fuel tank make the same sound as the exhaust that the OP wants?

Not wanting to go off topic, but Olaf's contribution reminds me of a 'helpful' post I once read giving advice to someone who wanted to pep up their boxer:
"remove the large complex part attached to the rear wheel dustcap, and replace it with the equivalent item from a Ducati..."

No way you'll get an S1000RR sound with a K100 engine.
2 valves vs 4 valve per cylinder
different timing
different stroke/bore ratio
different inertia
different diameters, sections and junctions in the exhaust sytem
different engine disposition that determines a particular design for K100 pipes that are not the same lenght

The only thing you'll get is looking like a bum twho wants to make me believe he has an S1000RR with it's noisy K100...
and who thinks that noise = power. Did you heard something about harmonics and pressure regulation in an exhaust? Any mod of the exhaust will degrade your engine performance.

I picked up a Remus and it sonuds nice on my K1100RS - bit of Bark but a K sounds like a K !!  roundel

So to sum it up Olaf, did the bigger fuel tank make the same sound as the exhaust that the OP wants?

Absolutely no idea about the sound Bob, but the K1100 that's attached to it is bloody nice!!

A good exhaust note is also defined by the engine configuration. Like a V6 against a straight 6 will never sound the same, doubt even a 2v as against a 4v head sound the same. Ks top out about 8,500rpm, the S1000RR goes on a long way past that.

But yes the Akra exhausts do sound nice.

I'm quite partial to a bit of noise myself. :-) regardless of whether I get more horsepower, though a little more mid range might be nice.
As said, a K100 will never sound like a flash new one but that doesn't mean you can't make them sound crisp. Modified Aftermarket Exhaust Sound 447221

seani I saw a really good  shaped collector , more the likes of a proper designed one, with the length and mould of the collector falling into the correct race type design rules , Plus the flanges required to fit standard pipes with clamps rather than interference , and spring loaded jobies  on the facebook pages recently , italian and fairly well priced I must say ... cant find the link at the moment ...but will look again when my head clears and back pain subsides
its really a pity that we cant get more even length header pipes before the collector to take the best advantage of the configuration of the engine .

I will be working on this ...yes its a dream, but I recon can be achieved ..pity bert 2 is no longer active here , I think he has quite a collection of k bikes now .and would love to try and support him into some new development ...but  well its hard being me at the best of times giggle

Early this week I picked up 2 boxes........................with a shiny nice new full Remus system in it. No idea yet how this will sound but looking forward to getting it on the K1100LT.

Someone in UK put it up at a bargain basement price so I was happy. Think I got the last one too.

And I now just got a message to say I now have a full set of studs nuts and washers......mmmmmm

How easy or hard is it to get the old one off? The K100RT was no problem, all came out as they should but the K1100 has different mountings. Later K1100 with the ABS by the battery.

I went for this because the headers did their usual cracking and two of them are fully separated from the exhaust. I realised with the amount of use this was going to be an ongoing problem of welding from time to time and replacing mounts/bushings as service items. I wasn't looking for noise or performance increase, just to solve a problem and prevent a reoccurrence.

My initial intention was to go for a collector and a slip on pipe but the Remus popped up for much less money and no 'it might fit' bits involved. When I looked at a used one from James Sherlock and added the mountings and so on and the cracking issues would remain, the Remus worked out about €100 more. The BMW one will be welded up and polished and put in the shed.

A few sunny days on a patio are great for polishing exhausts. I use wet and dry for it, the 'wet' comes in little green bottles and a little over 4% active ingredient is about right.

Being fussy the Remus headers are not polished to mirror finish but are well finished....will go at that too before putting it on as there seems to be a surplus stock of wet and dry after Christmas. Just makes it easier to keep them clean. Purists will probably say matt is better for heat dissipation.....there is a place for them too......

I just cleaned up the exhaust for my K100RS 16V which by the way is a stock exhaust for early K100's.  It went on with a bit of fiddling with the mount, but works quite well.  I had a remus exhaust, but removed it because it embarrassed me when riding through nice neighborhoods, actually almost everywhere I rode in public.

Anyway, I cleaned mine by washing well and drying.  Then I put a good coat of Naval Jelly and left it for about an hour, applying a bit every now and then to keep it wet.  Then I used the Naval Jelly as the wet for 2500 wet ot dry.  About an hour or so for the header pipes and a half hour for the can.  I probably could have done the headers faster if I had disassembled them.

Results are quite nice.

Of course, there's this one that Smitty fitted a while back... A quick forum search reveals a whole heap of interesting stuff. I'll often exhaust that possibility before asking a question that's likely had a fair few hits in the past.

Charlie, yes it's a shame Bert2.0 isn't more active.
I went for a ride with Smithy the other day and his Zorst looks and sounds really well. Not too loud, but with a rorty note.
