Unless you need it for the rear shock just mark a line on a spanner or screwdriver in your tool roll for measuring the gearbox oil level. Or write the depth inside one of the panniers/storage box covers/under the seat.

If you just need it for the dip stick then the measurements are here and if you make a dipstick make ABSOLUTELY you cant drop it into the gearbox DAMHIK.

I have that picture saved and couldn't find it to post it/ But I have the 116mm dimension in my head too.

How do you get your rear wheel off? I found a wheel brace was needed and I have one in my kit marked......it cant fall into the gearbox.....

But the best advice is cut a plastic one and keep that on board. Plastic milk containers are good because they don't snap.

It was on the R80 many moons ago and I used a small piece of stainless. I remember thinking that it would be damn difficult to get out if I dropped it and promptly dropped it into the box. Being 316 stainless it is almost non-magnetic so I ended up removing the gearbox but managed to get it out by tipping the box upside down and shaking it after washing it out with petrol. All in all it took more than a day and cost me a new clutch which I found it to be well worn.

Mathew most aftermarket "C" spanners are too short to be successfully modified normally 6".
However this double ended one could be easily modified by carefully cutting the non appropriate shock adjuster off. then rounding off the end. the marks could be cut in either with a file or hacksaw.

Can I ask the obvious question? If your gearbox doesn't leak and you put the correct amount in each oilchange (and you stick to the service intervals!), why the worry? Perhaps that's a bit naive but I've always ended up dumping just about all of what was put in at the previous oilchange. The only bike that did 'consume' gearbox oil was my Guzzi G5; the output shaft seal leaked slightly and did a damn good job of lubricating the UJ, so I never bothered fixing it.
