I would like to add a car type temperature gauge to my 85 K100 RT, probably an AutoMeter brand.   From my reading it looks like I would remove the coolant drain plug and replace this with a temperature sender.  The AutoMeter gauges have an American thread temp sender but they offer American to Metric thread adapters.  My questions does anyone know what the thread size is of the coolant drain plug?  Thanks, Jim

Can't speak to the thread size on the sender, but offer a word of caution.  The OEM sender has a blunt tip that does not extend into the coolant passage.  Every sender I saw when I was looking to add a gauge had an extended probe.

With the already marginal cooling that these bikes seem to have, I would be careful about sticking an obstruction into the coolant flow path at the pump.  I suspect that the probe on the OEM sender was designed that way so as to not impede the coolant flow.

Good point there on the obstruction.

I changed out the temperature sensor behind the rad and it looked like it did not extend into the waterway either, its got a little header pipe of its own so it doesn't obstruct the waterway.....and fills with crud.

Thanks, it looks like AutoMeter has an adapter, Metric Adapters pn 2265.  I will also be aware of the possible obstruction due to sensor length.   jim

On the K100LT they had a Temperature Meter.  On the BMW parts fiche they show it under the Additional Instrument section.  They show the meter connection to a Temperature Sensor,  pn  11531460287.   Does anyone know and have a picture or manual picture of where this sensor is located on the engine?  I've checked the two manuals I have and cannot find it's location.

It replaces the coolant drain plug.

The picture in your post is correct.
The part number is wrong, it's for the coolant stub on the cylinder head.
Correct part number is 62 16 1 459 270.

The temperature sensor goes in the coolant drain hole in the water pump at the lower front of the engine.  If the sensor is not used, there will be a hex head plug in the port.

Remember that the gauge must be suitable to work with the BMW sensor. You can pick up an original gauge for about 60.00 secondhand and your K100 has the location for it from factory. Depending on the year of your bike, most of the wiring is in the harness too, so it is pretty much plug and play. You will need the wiring from the sensor that runs up to the harness under the tank. Not sure what year the harness had the wiring included, but my '87 RS has it.
Motorworks UK website will show all the bits you need and all available secondhand. Also have a look at the parts fiche in MAXBMW
