Howdy folks,
My K100 wants a Hall Effect Sensor (probably)
I believe this is the itch that keeps my brick from running.
Not pleased with the $400+ Ebay new price
Less so with the $600 OEM price.

Saw one get away from me at a $40 price.  '85 K100 HES 177381

Any goodness out there?

I am not sure where the thread is but there is one here somewhere about changing the sensors themselves for small money. Apart from that there are places like beemerboneyard or motorworks.co.uk or jamessherlock.co.uk to pick up used ones. I don't think any of us would really suggest spending $600 on a new one. Spend a small few $ more and buy a parts bike would be a better option.


Out of curiosity does you K fire up at all?

Thanks for the interest folks.
The "Probably" comes from the symptoms.
For a while ~1 yr or so, she would run fine (occasional lag at low revs with a decided pick up at 2500 - 3000, but otherwise bullet proof)
then...
motor cut out underway, nap for a bit with a short cycle of  -starter turn for a second, nothing for a second, then starter again for a second, etc.... all while holding the button
after a bit of roadside spectating, she would start right off and run again.
Now she just does the fuel pump-starter on-off shuffle.

I've pulled every relay, cleaned every obvious connector (and start switch), jumper wired the collective ground from the frame to the NEG connection on the trans, pulled and cleaned the starter.

The forums suggest the HES is the culprit so....

Those symptoms sounds like flat battery. For example, there's enough battery terminal voltage to turn on the systems and engage the start relay but, as soon as the starter kicks in, the current draw drops the terminal voltage below the drop-out voltage for the starter relay and the starter dies.

OK robmack,
I like the thought process.
I have tried this with the charger hooked up and "green light".
I can concede that batteries have internal quirks that can look green at first blush and still fail a guy.
I can try a swap and another attempt.

I'll get back to ya.

When you are starting the icu gives an earth to the starter relay and the FI relay for 1.5 sec then if the hall sensor is not giving a signal that earth is removed as a safeguard against the fuel pump running all the time the ignition is on whether the engine is running or not. So I put my money or what there is of it on it being a hall sensor, probably the 2-3 sensor. 
The sensors are available by themselves http://hiem.com/hall-effect-switches/vane-sensor-bbhme56/  these are not cheap and there are places which are much cheaper so have a hunt around the forum and you will find quite a few places that members have bought them for around $10.

This can also happen with a dodgy plug to FICU [unit under the seat] connection. Have had it on 2 different Ks, clean up the pins and sorted. I have a feeling the technical explanation is one of the pin connection was breaking contact and the bike would cut out. I cleaned up the plug and pins and swapped the FICU unit with another bike thinking the unit might be the problem. All was good. About a month later swapped the FICU unit back in and all was still good.

On a K75 the same issue, the plug wasn't seating properly in the FICU.

Got an E-bay HES for $75 and the girl runs again.Rick, your assessment of the timing of things sold me on the HES and the price was a reasonable experiment. cheers

I replaced the HES and she runs. I want to thank everyone who participated in the dialogue. Now that we're up and at 'em again I've run into other problems but that would be another thread. I have fuel delivery issues now (probably due to the months of sitting idle while deciding what to do) but she runs with throttle input but won't Idle for love nor money.
I'm going to hunt the forum for answers and, failing any satisfaction, will post another question to the collective wisdom.
