Hi All,
This is potentially a job that will need doing on my 'bike'. I use the term bike loosely at this stage as it's not all there as I have said before. 'Not quite all there' may describe the owner too...
Anyway, I have never removed a bearing in a part such as the final drive of  K100 and am sure I have no special bearing removal tools.
I understand the value of heating certain bits and cooling others when dealing with bearings and as yet have only ever changed an upper steering head bearing myself.
Tools needed?
Useful tips?
Looking forward to getting into the garage to start assessing, assembling and getting the skeleton back together. Will post photos asap.
Cheers
Neal

Yay for the power of the search function - final drive bearing play seems to be a hot topic this weekend (you and Snod Blatter), so good to put up the link you found to MikeP's (RIP) original post.

He certainly makes it look like a very straightforward job, but I quake at the idea of doing it in the deserts of southern Morocco! Crikey - I can't even keep sand out of a sandwich on a sandy beach let alone contemplate open final drive surgery in such conditions. Such were the skills and capabilities of the man.

Whilst I don't have play in my final drives (yet) I am heading into that milage zone and they are starting to sound louder when running which I assume to be the first indications of wear.

Hi Neal, welcome to the club. What mileage is yours at, out of interest?

I have just possibly made a huge mistake and watched this video, I think the only tools he uses that I don't have are an adjustable windy gun (no biggy) and the bearing puller with small claws. It all looks very possible, ooh-err...

There again, there's stuff like this. If I hadn't just replaced my shock I'd be tempted to go that way, look at all the extra stuff you get!

First indication of wear is long before you hear it and you need to catch it at that point.

The bearing feel is the first clue, you can feel this before there is play. This was what I thought I was feeling and my friend confirmed it was on way out. Once you have movement you have already generated excess wear. When the bearing came out it was fkd but sure never felt anything like it while it was in there mostly because I hadn't lost the small amount of preload in it. It was replaced from the wheel side. We knew the other side was good because of the clutch job 8 weeks before.

If in doubt go in and do it, saves a huge amount of work if you get it early. Once there is play [this happens very fast] it chews the bevel drive, can very quickly break teeth and lock the final drive which is an instant off.
