Hi just wanted peoples opinions?
I have a 1991 k100 but it probably needs a fair but spending on it it needs rear disc, clutch oil seal, water pump, cables, a good scrub!, It has 97k on it and I still use it regularly i did 200 miles on Saturday it uses oil (but i put that down to the clutch seal, it was near the top of the sight glass and now is near the bottom after 200miles)
So my question is do I repair it or go for a new bike something like an r1100 rt for under 3k? I would try to do the work myself however the clutch seal frightens me! Thanks k

You buy an R1100 you will have similar things to fix. Just hop in there and do it. It is not that difficult. If you would fix the front wheel bearings on your car you are quite capable of doing any work required. The sooner you fix it the sooner you'll be out there picking the bugs out of your teeth.

Haha yes bugs in my teeth a bit of protein! Love riding it don't mind wrench work just struggle for time! It's not urgent as it's still going strong so I could do it in stages, I think before i start anything I will do a compression test just to make sure it's worth the effort!

Just start a program of maintenance and keep at it and soon you'll have a bike that's getting better and better to ride and needs less work.

Check out the oil consumption before going at anything. The clutch seal shouldn't be using that much, otherwise the clutch would be toast long ago. But that seal issue will potentially be on any BMW bike, K or R bike alike. Its not so difficult to do especially if some forum member was enticed over your way witha beer or two. 4v engines apparently use a drop of oil anyway. So I would do an accurate measure. I got my K1100 and check the oil a lot. A bit dismayed first time to find a drop then looked at the clock and it was 1000 miles since the previous weeks check. Took about 250ml which is like a litre in 4,000 miles of mostly motorway driving. I didn't see anything wrong in that. I still keep a regular eye on it but its now fine.

I have a 4 valve K100RS of unknown mileage. It uses about a quart of oil every 800-900 miles which is a lot more than my other bricks. It starts readily, idles smoothly and runs like a freight train. For the cost of a ring job I can buy enough Rotella T6 synthetic to ride at least another 40,000+ miles.

Snap my k100 is like that starts and goes real well! It's always used oil so I'll just keep an eye on it, it's one of those things undoubtedly i would miss it if I sold it but then my sensible side panics as it is 27 years old! Well if anyone has done this job before and fancy`s giving me a hand in exchange for beer am near Burnley Manchester uk! Haha 😀

The BMW spec for allowable oil consumption borders on insane. From page 00-30 of the BMW K75/K100 Repair Manual:
"Maximum permissible oil consumption rate: 0.151 l per 100km." affraid

Which works out to 2.55 quarts every 1,000 miles or 1.51 liters every 1,000 km.

In the olden days at Beemer rallies we could always count on K bikes to clear out the mozzies when they started up, such was the cloud bank emitted. Of course, that was the early bikes, but left on the side stand, most, not all, will still remind you they have oil in them.
