Hi Team, I have been out of contact for some time, being really busy with travels and the job in general. This has driven some lifestyle changes and the family and me have decided that Australia is where it's at. I hope to be moving to Oz in a months time. Meantime I will be selling my bikes here in South Florida and hope to find a good one across the pond(s) :-).
No doubt I'll be back with questions in the near future, so thanks in advance.

Further this is an advance warning for the Aussie team members that you might get a big Dutch guy in your vicinity shortly that likes beer, bikes and...... ;-) Time for the storm flag!

Change is good as it keeps life interesting, but I'll be sorry to see the bikes go....

All the best and safe riding, Rene

Warning to big Dutch guy heading down under...standby to be utterly overwhelmed by the kamaraderie, enthusiasm and incredible hospitality of the Aussie Krew. They might even be persuaded to have a beer or three with you...

Which part of Oz are you heading to? If it is anywhere near NSW/Southern Queensland - you are certainly doomed in the very best way possible. Why not ship the GT out there? There are some superb roads that you would enjoy riding while looking for the right Aussie bike.

Just watch out for the spiders, drop bears and kangaroos playing chicken...

Good luck with your move!

Thanks mate, much appreciated! :-)

Initially it will be based in Sydney with most of the work along the Queensland coast. There's a possibility of later going to Brisbane but we'll need to see how that works out. Looking forward to spend some (considerable) time in my wife's birth country!

Cheers, Rene

Rene, great decision! Make sure you post here as soon as you get yourself settled so we can arrange a get together.

We've already got a big Dutch guy in the form of Klompy so another will be most welkome.

Cheers

BAE is speaking from his experience, which mirrors my experience in 2 visits to Ireland. Smile

I have no experience of shipping bikes internationally, but if the cost stacks up, its worth having bikes that are familiar to you if all is well with them mechanically. With the best will in the world, like Forrest Gump you never know what you're going to get when you buy another one.

In NSW, the cost of having the '85 on the road under club/historic registration for me is about $120 per year after about $170 for the first year, including comprehensive insurance. It might be a bit more if based in Sydney rather than in rural areas like me.

If you bring a bike here, you should be fine to register it as long as you have good proof of ownership. You would have to change the headlight so that the dipped beam goes down left rather than right, as we are on the correct side of the road here. Razz

Spiders are smaller than boots, so no problem there. Kangaroos just bounce off K bikes - just ask Tom FKR from this forum. The drop bears are another thing altogether, being the most dangerous of our native wildlife. Keep looking up if you're in a forested area. Wearing your bike helmet will confine the injuries to parts other than your head.

Bill

It will be good to meet Rene. If you'll be working up on the Queensland coast there are lots better places than Brisbane to live.

Guyra NSW is almost exactly half way between Sydney and Brisbane on the more scenic inland route.
Just sayin' ...

Thanks team, appreciate the response.

If I IIRC Guyra is just north of Tamworth? That's where the in-laws live so definitely a go sometime :-)

I would prefer to take the K1200GT, but am afraid I will not get through the admin burden in time. Movers tentative June 25th.....

Looking forward to meet up with you all after all those years of contact on the forum!! :-)

Brgds, Rene

Yep, Guyra is 150km north of Tamworth. We go there quite frequently for different things.
Not sure if it's still the case, but you used to be able to partially dismantle a motorcycle and then ship it as parts to Australia from the US. ( literally just take the front wheel off). Then you still have the shipping expenses of course and the bureaucracy to deal with.... scratch
