As some may be aware, I now have the two Banners, having obtained them by meeting up with our esteemed (and very funny) administrator extraordinaire, Crazy Frog. We coordinated a mid-way point in northern Maine/New Brunswick and met, with my brother Jo, to exchange them and have brekky. After eating, a quick signing, photos, and waiting out a short, lashing rain, we headed in our different directions, Bert driving to Montreal via the Gaspe Peninsula and us heading across Maine and New Hampshire on old state highway 2. A 7 hour ride on the turnpike up was a 12 hour ride returning on the fun roads. We arrived in Pepperell Mass well after dark.

My return plans have me itching to go back to the US west coast via Canada. I am planning to stay in country from upstate NY through to British Columbia, dropping back into the US in the Okanogan valley or through Abbotsford. I'll drop my planned North East trajectory here later today.

I hope you have some No-Doz for riding across the middle of Canada. (Not that the mid US is any better.)

Strewth, much of Minnesota & the Dakotas do remind me of the Canadian prairie, except that, perhaps, 'Canadians are polite, reasonable but won't be pushed around.'

Of the two directions to head in come Tuesday I'm not certain which will allow most of those who have expressed interest, along the paths to meet with me, to sKribble on the Banners.

The first takes me straight up to Canadia towards Watertown via route 12 from Utica. That'd take me  over into Ontario near the Thousand Island region.

Alternatively, staying in New York on I-90 (cue groans of boredom) towards Buffalo, where I reckon they must have vast barnyards full of wingless chooks, entering Canadia near Niagara Falls. Quick cheesy story: my AmeriKan dad and Aussie mum honeymooned there in the '50s.
That'll take me straight into Ontario, but, oh, that maps looks mighty busy with endless neighbourhoods and as Rush would call it, subdivisions. Above 'Tronno' it would set me up nicely for a good run towards Sudbury and launch me over the lakes.

So, get yer dibs in, those who would sign. I dont know your exact whereabouts, but this might give you some idea of my thinking on direction. I reckon Tuesday eve or Wednesday morn is best, location dependent. After that, look for my tail light disappearing into the distance. I really hope we can make this happen. Ping me on the forum for my mobile phone number.

Cheers.

I vote for Buffalo.  I think your highest chance of meeting up with people who'd want to sign the banner is via I-90 or a parallel route like Route 20 to Buffalo if you want to avoid the tolls and boredom.  Then cross at Lewiston and head along the QEW and Highway 400 northwards to routes around the Great Lakes.  Your alternative route crossing at Gananoque would lead you two possible ways - one across the top of Lake Ontario via 401 towards Toronto and the 400 I mentioned, or north-westwards towards Algonquin Park avoiding civilisation but riding some very nice twisties.

There's a map for motorcyclists of Southern Ontario here for you to ponder over.

Well, it doesn’t sound like you’ll be real close, but if a banner should pass through the Indianapolis area, I’ll spread the word to the Indy BMW club.  You can find 15-20 of them having breakfast together any Saturday morning.

Buffalo is best for me.  I work Tuesday evening and it would be difficult to meet up anywhere else.  Crossing at Lewiston/Queenston lets you swing around the end of Lake Ontario and you could meet the TO contingent on the way up Parry Sound.  Another route you could take to avoid the I-90 would be along the shore of Lake Ontario.  With the onshore breezes off the lake, it will be a bit cooler than riding inland on Rte 20.

Thanks for that map link.

It does look like the Buffalo area works best. I reckon I'd be sailing into the area round about four or five o'clock PM (roll on rush hour!) So if anyone's able let's meet. Name a convenient time/town/place and I'll shoot for it. I'll get a room outside of town as I do need to be rolling early Wednesday morning. Cheers.

Sorry but I do not know the Buffalo area so hoping one of the other members can suggest a good place to meet.

The two K representing the marque were ridden to bucolic and lovely Woodstock NB in Canadia for the quasi-official handing over of the well-traveled Banner(s).

The overly serious border squad were not impressed on the return leg.

I'll let the state side folks choose the time and place to meet up.

My vote for Canadian route, if time is secondary to scenic and memorable, then I would suggest heading up to Tobermory, ferry across to Manitoulin Island and then on west over the top of Huron & Superior.  Getting above Toronto/Barrie on the 400 series highways is faster and more efficient if there are no accidents, it isn't rush hour or if there aren't the motorised masses exiting the 'GTA' (Greater Toronto Area) after an event.  I now do my best to avoid the major highways here in the southern part of the province, taking the secondary roads with no sacrifice in time.

Looking forward to meeting up tomorrow!

The rains from the south are closing in on the six New England states. After a last mid-day meet up with my Greenfield MA-residing daughter today I'm packing up to depart Tuesday morning. Since I'm in the northern tier of Massatucky I'm heading west on the Mohawk Trail/Route 2 through No Adams, Williamstown and into New York near Troy/Albany on Route 7. I reckon with the six-plus hours it'll take to get across upstate on the slow roads, and the off chance a local New England member can meet for coffee/tea in the AM before I depart NE, I will cross NY mainly on Route 20 and might merge with I-90 after Seneca Falls for the run towards Beefaloo.

TWB, are you planning on staying in the Buffalo area?  If you plan to cross at the Lewiston Bridge I would suggest staying in Niagara Falls.  There is a wide selection of hotels on Niagara Falls Blvd near the I-190 and are only 5 minutes from the bridge.

Staying there would also make it easier for me to meet with you.  I work in Youngstown on Tuesday night which is only 15 minutes from the boulevard and I could meet you for breakfast(I'll buy) Wednesday morning before you leave.

What route are you planning on taking across New York?  Knowing that would make it easier to pick a meeting place.

Another option if you follow the lake shore would be to meet in Youngstown.  It's a nice little village at the mouth of the Niagara River into Lake Ontario.  I work at the Yacht club and could fix you up with a Place to pitch a tent.  There is a nice diner and a pub very near by and the club has showers.  Being the tourist season, staying there could save you at least $100.

Would the Western NY members want to meet in Youngstown?Cross Continent Return Ride with the Banner(s) Dscn1510

If TWB is up for pitching a tent at the Yacht club in Youngstown we could meet for breakfast at the Village diner in Youngstown.  They do a good job with all the basics: coffee, eggs, meat, pancakes, home fries, etc.  They also have a nice view from the dining room.

I will be around Tuesday evening and just found out that I won't have to work.

I got the keys and rode the bike to the end parking slot of the Wagon Wheel motel, room 18. It was not the finest place in town but was cheap, clean and relatively quiet. The lot was full.

Two men sat outside the room next to mine, strumming guitars and pulling on icy tall boys. A woman sat with them. I'd barely slid my helmet off when, unsolicited, the thin, old woman wheezingly offered up that I ought to be careful on that thing. She's known many people who didn't make it. Her years as a nurse showed her what they can do to a person. Why just the last week she'd heard of a neighbours kid ran into a car not wearing his helmet. They're dangerous and I should think about riding.

The two men sat holding their guitars quietly as cigarettes slowly smoldered in their free hands. I nodded my acceptance of her concern, said hello to the group and continued dismounting. She rattled off a few more reasons how to die on a motorcycle, still waving her ciggie at me. I smiled, wishing to be polite, but she continued, and I was the sole focus of her darting eyes and busy tongue. Some folks like to hear themselves talk.

Now I don't mind what others do, but don't want to hear from them what's best for me. I said at last, if I'm going to go at least it'll be quick, rather than a slow decline up in smoke. Silence. I unlocked the door and walked into my room.

Several minutes later the guitar playing resumed and the two men sang pretty well. I didn't hear much from her that evening.

Very Happy  My mother in law was also a former nurse who liked to smoke.  She didn't make it past 73.  The inheritance my wife got took just enough pressure off the household finances to allow my wife to say yes to me about buying a bike again.  And here I am now....

I should mention that I drank several beers with the cheap motel guitar players and woke up with a headache that only a good ride can cure.

Part of my ride was rising clouds and the other part was this drenching stuff spraying all round me. It never got below 20c all day, and my gear kept it at bay.

I'm camped east of our morning meeting place, the Youngstown Village Diner. I'm an early riser, and wouldn't mind a reasonably early departure so I can make some tracks, time for rituals and merriment notwithstanding. If the collective choose a time to meet I will be there. Today was a good day.

Where did you camp?  Are you on the lakeshore?

I'm right here in Youngstown tonight, so any time is good for me.

Half an hour east, the dense woods of Lockport. That's as far as felt good. I found comida Mexicana y cerveza, so happy am I.

Missed Vermonter Laitch by about half an hour this AM. He PM'd me early, so I got it when I rose, and I PM'd straight away, texted and voicemailed him too, but damn if it didn't align for both parties. By the time he'd let me know he was underway I was over the Berks and beyond, and the rain started to fall.

Funny how it went anti-clockwise over central New York and Pennsyltransylvania all day! I musta been hit by the same raindrops multiple times.

Oooo, thats early.  I'm targeting 8:30, if that's not too late. Rush hour out of Toronto and through Hamiltom over the Skyway Bridge cant say what delays I'll encounter.

The Upstate New York meet up near old Fort Niagara, Youngstown.

I'm currently in Parry Sound, Georgian Bay region of Ontario, and hoping to see the Sudbury area tonight. It was a fine meeting with a group of gentlemen and lady, too. The tucker, Koffee and tea seemed to go down well, the stories well told and Kamaraderie evident. Robmack turned up on queue at 8.30 and had time to tuck into brekky. The party continued until after 10am when I realised I needed to beat feet.

Both Woodie and Robmack assisted me with the correct roads entering Canada, into and passing through the metro area of southern Ontario. Rob took me all the way to Route 400 which gave me a leg up to make time out of the congestion of traffic.

Cheers to all, a real pleasure to meet more of the K forum folk.

I note that today I crossed the 5,500 mile mark of my journey, a bigger chunk of miles than I thought I'd be at at this juncture. It's all those wonderful side trips off the main stopping points.

This morning's meet up was an absolutely pleasurable way to start the day!  Lots of koffee at 6:30am at a diner that I will be going back to.  TWB, .75, Caveman & Marie and Robmack, I hope to meet up with you all again.

Dazza, thanks for bringing the sKroll through this way.  I hope you enjoy your ride over the top of Superior.

Agreed Woodie! Thank you all for the great breakfast, enjoyable conversation and camaraderie. I appreciate that you were able to wait until I arrived (amazing considering that I was able to cross the border on an expired passport).

TWB and I made good time on the 407ETR avoiding lots of congestion on the other highways, which compensated for a later than desired start to the journey.

Looking forward one day to another similar meetup; who knows.
