I have installed a Spacerack/Gearsack rack to my K and need to tack the brackets to the rack while on the bike to get the exact position. Do I need to disconnect the battery or ECU so I don't fry anything? If I were a better fabricator i would be able to get the angles and measurements right with the frame on a bench but alas.............

Hi Marc, yes, the battery should be disconnected. I would also unplug the FICU just to be sure. Some more learned friends may add to these comments. Cheers Tom Perhaps the ICU should also be unplugged.

My normal modus operandi when stick welding on any bike is that if it's electronic and it can be unplugged, unplug it. On the K that would be the ICU, FICU, battery and the alternator plug.

A mate of mine welded the cracked centre stand on his K100RT whilst it was still attached to the machine. Good thing our local dealer friend had a used $300 ECU (they were $600 new back in those daze) as it was the first thing to go up in smoke. After spending the extra dosh he was off and running again. Lesson learnt.

Um. A stick welder will do less damage to the surrounding paintwork, but that would be the ideal solution.

Thanks guys. I unplugged everything and tacked it with the mig. Then removed the rack and welded it up properly.

Agreed, when welding on anything with electric you always disconnect the battery(s).

Dai's advice is correct on disconnecting battery and electrical components - especially ECU and EFI computers. The other thing well worth doing is to adequately shield around the weld area so as not to cause damage to metal. paint, plastic, rubber and wiring. Weld spatter can cause damage to these items. Have a portable fire extinguisher on hand also - just in case.
