Quite awhile ago I believe somebody in OZ came up with an aftermarket replacement universal joint. Can anybody come up with a part number or a vehicle that the joint comes out of.
Regards Martin.

The original is : K5-A766 available from Hardy Spicer approx. $120 AUD
This is for K100 not sure if K75 use the same, too lazy to look it up
Munich also sell one with a grease nipple, $140 from memory, but it requires a slight yoke modification to fit it

I think the alternative was one out of a Mercedes steering box but I don't think it was as heavy duty as the original

smithy showed me  2 different variations of that uni joint

apparently they are common parts  and under 50 each...  sorry don't have the part numbers to hand

some variations can be problematic at installing because the way they are fitted ...to the novice, like me at least

Hi Martin,
The UJ on my soon to be completed 86 K100 was replaced a few months ago. The UJ joint was obtained from CBC bearings. Smithy has one of these UJ's and he may provide the numbers for you. The cost of these items were about $34.00 at the time.
Hope that helps.
Cheers
Tom

Martin, thanks for posting.  I will be watching this thread with interest as a friend is looking for a front u-joint for a 16V K100RS drive shaft.

It appears that R-bike owners replace these joints and mention the joints they use.  We're not sure if the joints are the same across different models'.  My friend is also concerned that a garden variety joint can't handle the high rpm operation.  He keeps mentioning how often he had to change the joints on the PTO shafts that drive his agricultural equipment.  He says those shafts usually run at 500-600rpm vs the 3000+ that our drive shafts run at cruising speed.

The Z20 (spline) complete driveshaft is the same between K75 & K100-8V variants, part number 26 11 1 454 063.

AFAIK they are the same. Its midnight here and the monsters are outside so when it's light I'll have a look. Very Happy

K5-A702 seems odd.  The Hardy Spicer catalog notes the K5-A766 application as "staked BMW Motorcycle".  The A702 is described as "staked steering".

The A766 is listed as 19mm x 44mm while the A702 is 19mm x 48mm.

Judging from the results sourcing these joints, finding a place to buy them will be a bit of a chore.

That's right, there is two different size UJ that fit the mono lever. believe me I know, both those will fit depending on the one you have.

The shaft in question is from a Paralever with two u-joints.  In a couple weeks we'll be pulling it out and measuring to confirm the size.
