Hey All!

I've become the owner of a 1985 K100RT in the last month. It was my father's. I'm told it was one of the first 100 into the states.. neat.

It had been sitting unused for the last 12 years. Somewhere around 115,000 miles on it.

It took a bit of work to get it running again. Of course a new battery and spark plugs, the original plug wires were corroded. Went with the NGK kit to replace them. Everything in the tank was replaced as you might expect.

Only 1 injector was spraying fuel. A fuel bath in my little ultrasonic cleaner and some carb-cleaner blasts was able to save them. Running seafoam in the fuel right now as well.

The rear gearbox seal was leaking quite badly while my dad had it. He had a new seal but was never able to install it, after stripping one of the retaining bolts for the brake rotor. I was able to extract it and replace the seal. Took the opportunity to look at the rear driveshaft splines while I had the gearbox off. They hadn't been touched in some 50 or 60k miles.. but thankfully were not dry and look to be in perfect condition.

The tachometer was getting stuck at 1800rpm. I have a brand new dash unit in my spare parts stash that came with the bike, but when taking a look inside the current unit, found a stray spring impeding the mechanism behind the face. Removed that and it appears to be just fine now.. no idea where that spring was meant to be though. Took the opportunity to replace the green bulbs with red LEDs for back lighting.

Looking forward to putting some miles on the bike. Glad to see there is an active forum for these machines still.

Things I need to address still:
RH handle bar bushing is loose, and the bar wiggles slightly.
I'd like to actually sync the throttle bodies properly. I have cleaned the air bypass screws and set them to 1.5 turns out.
Check valve clearances. Is there a preferred source for shims?
Still need to replace transmission oil.

Welcome!  Sounds like you have a good handle on things so far.  It's nice to see you taking such an interest in your dad's bike.  At 115,000 miles there should be an awful lot of life left in it.  Hope you enjoy it as much as the rest of us enjoy ours.

Welcome to the forum.

The first US K100RT has a VIN ending in 50001.  Check your VIN against that to see where it was in the first litter.

I'd say that qualifies as a first litter bike.

I have the motor from 51720 in my garage. Only has 59K miles on it.
