will the ECU from a 1991 K100RS work in a 1988 K100RS ? I found one locally for cheap and if it will be a direct replacement I'd like to get it as a spare for when I travel

No, not even close.

The 91 K100RS is a 4 valve engine that uses a Motronic while an 88 RS is a 2 valve engine that uses an L-Jetronic.

ETA: And there's no need to even have a backup at home for the L-Jetronic of your 88, much less carry with you.  The failure rate of them is extremely low.  Most of the failures I've heard of are bikes that sit forever and the cause of failure is ants, spiders or other critters making a home in them.

Even though I have a spare likewise its never the unit to go but improper electrical connections or loose plug. I just swap them out from time to time and clean the pins at my leisure leaving it in the shed for future use.

16v one won't work for a 2 v engine, also a K75 and K100 are not interchangeable either.

Welding on center stands* while both negative and positive connections are active is also not recommended for the general good health of the ECU.
ECU question 610153

* My mate Rocket Dog's '85 K100RT had a cracked stand, itself a very high failure rate. His mechanic fired up the welder and did the dirty deed. He bought him a used $300 ECU from the local dealer to get home to New Jersey. Lesson learnt.

When I need to sort out part compatability I go to www.realoem com/BMW and enter the last 7 digits of my VIN. From there I search the sub-sections of ETK via the images until I locate the specific part number. Highlighted in blue it is easy to click on the number to see whether it's also in other K bike (or even R bike) catalogues. Opening one or two of those other catalogues helps to confirm it is correct and interchangeable between machines.

In case anyone has concerns about the K ECU cojones, this thing hit a tree - the ECU somehow had its casing knocked clean off (the PCB you can see is its innards - still connected)
I repaired and refitted the casing, the thing is still working without a glitch 4 years later....

The only thing I have seen that causes failure is a pressure cleaner and water ingress.

Chris that is the most original photo of a cafe racer I have seen to date - LOVE IT!  Is it being moved to the compost bins in the background?  Shame....

Nah, just polished the scratches out.

Thanks for the info I won't bother to waste the 50 bucks the guy wanted for it . It won't work anyway so I can't use it and I 'll stop looking for a spare if you all say this part is that good unless I can get the right one for 20 dollars.
