A little help with valve noise. I have a 91 16 valve k100rs. I bought the bike with 4000 miles on the clock, After rebuilding the brake system and fuel lines I put another 8000 on the bike over the past two years Just took it on a 800 mile ride. Checked the oil level and topped off before the trip and when returning home noticed that the engine valve train sounded a lot louder than usual. Upon checking the oil window, I noticed it was very low. It took 1/2 quart of oil and the sight glass line was close to the top max fill line. The bike does not smoke and runs strong but now there is a noticeable valve tick in one of the cylinders. Sounds like a stuck lifter, but knowing this is overhead cam, I'm not sure how to proceed.. Any Advice on how to proceed from here? I'd like to fix it myself if possible. I uploaded a short video. https://youtu.be/OZeZn5chXdk. Afreind said to use engine flush to clean everything out.

First thing I would do is remove the valve cover to check the valve clearances and the shims to see if one of them has slipped out of it's bucket.

If everything looks good there, the next is to check the cam chain tension and the timing of the cams.  A loose chain could possibly allow the chain to slip on the cam sprockets and alter the timing.

As far as oil consumption, I would suspect a stuck oil control ring on one or more cylinders.  A bike with 4,000 miles in 25 years is a good candidate for gummy internal parts.   I had a problem with stuck oil control rings on my 16 valve K100RS, and running a half quart of Marvel Mystery Oil in the crankcase greatly reduced oil usage after a couple hours of run time over a five month winter storage.

Have you checked the exhaust headers for leaking, sounds a bit like that.

Thanks for the feedback.   Definitely not the exhaust headers and I'll check the shims and timing chain.  I was advised by several people to run Marvel through the bike but hadn't done that with a motorcycle engine before. So I'll drain out some of the oil and replace it with Marvel after I check the shims and chain tensioner.

Its a 16v, the shim cant slip out of the bucket.  The bucket is the shim, they come in different thicknesses.  Still check the clearances, at least you know where you are that way.
