Go back and check the connections again. The two switches have the same connectors and you have them reversed.

So you are saying that regardless of where the front brake switch is plugged into the wiring harness, it always lights up the choke indicator light, and no matter where you connect the choke switch it always lights the brake light.

Is that correct?

I have no idea how the wires in the wiring harness can change where they go when you change the switch you plug into a connector.

Not knowing the year of your bike we can't refer to the correct wiring diagram. The brake switch is connected to the Bulb Monitor Unit, but the choke switch isn't.

Has your bike been modified into a cafe racer?

Alistair1977 has an '83 K100RT according to his profile.

The choke indicator on the dash has absolutely no connection to the BMU. As Point75 pointed out, the harness wiring can't suddenly change function ... unless it has developed a fault. Have a look around to see if any wires are abrading against the frame or insulation looking disturbed.

Nor to the switchgear since the switch for the choke indicator is on the back of the throttle bodies and goes straight to the cluster.

This is truly bizarre!

What happens if only the choke switch is plugged in and the brake switch is not? Try the choke switch in both of the harness connectors. One of them has to light up the choke light in the cluster. Then plug the front brake switch into the other connector.

I realize it can be confusing because both switches are the same, with the same connector that can connect in several places in the harness.

Connector for the choke light has Violet/White and Brown wires.

Front brake switch has Green/Red and Green/Black wires.
