Hello, 4 weeks ago I started getting intermittant  failure to both lights, indicators and starter, but it would start after rocking in gear first. I took it to my competent, but not BMW experience dealer and changed the R/H handlebar switches, fuel pump and sender, starter motor and dis-connected the side stand cut out. Also, beefed up the main earth. All went well for 2 weeks (about 400 miles), then yesterday all those symptoms returned. Does anyone know what could be the cause? The battery is fine.
Thanks, Martin

The symptoms points to bad connection at the starter brushes and/or commutator.
When the starter was changed out, was it with a new one or a well used one?

Thanks for your reply, Inge. The starter was second hand, but my old one will be refurbished. I will try it when that is done.

It is a pretty easy job to do and should only take about an hour of your time. Requires you removing the battery then the starter motor and either a online manual or hard manual will take you through the disassembly. If the commutator is black or the brushes excessively worn you know you have a problem. On reassembly it is a good idea to smear a bit of Copper Kote grease around the starter motor where it goes into the housing. A mate had to slide hammer his starter out due to corrosion.

It looks like you took your bike to someone who does not know much about BMWs K and who changed bits hoping to fix it, probably at your expense. The starter will come out very easily as he has changed it, and the brushes are an easy job to do.

Thanks everyone who has helped with this. I had the starter motor refurbished , the tank re-sprayed and some tidying up done, then put it in part-exchange against a 2 year old R1200RS with 500 miles. Couldn't resist the 2 year unlimited mileage warranty.
Am now on the R1200RS forum mainly for luggage and other useful stuff.
Regards, Martin.
