Hi all, what do we think could be the long term damage from fitting a straight through exhaust, i've fitted a 4 into 1 collector and a china made stainless slip on to my k100rs 1988, you back off and it can back fire like a gun going off, i can fix this with a small baffle, i love the improvement on the looks and i dont mind the sound level i'm just worried i might be damaging the valves???????????

The only effect might be that because you don't mind the sound level, onlookers might view you as an inconsiderate, dimwitted novice when you ride among the general public and traffic with your ear-splitting moto but that is easily reversed by remounting a silencer. Your slip-on won't help the engine but probably won't damage it either.

I'd dump the pipe, if only because you're subject to the BSAU 193/1983 standard (ironically I'm not, as the Motorcycle Noise Act 1987 does not apply to Northern Ireland) which restricts you to 87dba. It's an MOT failure, you can be pulled by Mr.Plod and you can be fined for excessive noise. How likely the latter is likely to happen is open to debate...

Not only is a loud exhaust rude and inconsiderate of others, but the lack of back pressure in the exhaust system, unless compensated for in the tuning of ignition timing and mixture, results in a lot of heat stress on exhaust valves(burning) and less fuel efficiency(power output vs. fuel consumed).

The engineers have done a very nice job of optimizing engine output and longevity with the stock system.  Why not take advantage of their work?  It's seldom that modifications to the exhaust improves any aspect of engine performance.  Dyno tests have shown that for years.

Thanks for all the constructive comments and help, i'll measure the decibel level later today with said baffle (db killer) fitted. Just to give you an idea this k will be used for light green laning (off roading) so the low level 20kg lump had to go. It will be used on the road for the odd commute to work and between lanes.
So back to the original question do we think a change from the standared exhaust could do damage to the valves? i understand changing anything from the manufactures standard will affect performance ie back pressure and scavenging, i very much doubt i'm the only person to have removed the standard exhaust, again my question is - has it caused any issues?
Oh and to rub salt into the wounds - i've removed the center stand as it was collecting to much dirt and fitted enduro tires - and yes i know i'm going to burn in hell for this.

Straight through exhaust 44271 Straight through exhaust 44271 Seriously though, a noisy pipe when greenlaning is really not a good idea. Ask the TRF (Trail Rider Fellowship). There were severe problems back in the Nineties when various self-interest groups tried very hard to get trail bikes banned from green lanes (non-asphalt roads for anyone else) even though legally the bikes (and cars) were allowed on them. Those self-interest groups almost suceeded and noisy exhausts was one of the weapons they used. They're still trying (particularly a small but unfortunately very vocal minority of the horsey crowd) - a noisy exhaust becomes a good supply of ammunition.

I don't think your going to burn in hell for trying to convert K bike into somewhat of a duel sport type bike. I'm just plain lazy I would just get something more suitable for the job and easier to pick up out of the mud. But in the end to each his own, good luck!

I did do something about it and removed it and my hearing returned to normal soon afterwards.
That so called muffler has been sold on quite a few times since.
The K75 I am now riding has a staintune that is much quieter but still too intrusive for my comfort but maybe I am just getting old and cranky.

I still don't understand Tino27, a Greenlander is a sort of motocrosser? Would those straight through be low pipes or were you planning to upsweep them. Same goes for the Remus is it up near the top frame tubes or low down.

One would expect a knobbly tyred K100 to throw clods of dirt from this paddock to the next? Is that what you are planning?

I've seen a few K75's changed over to GS type things and always thought the old XL350 Honda style pf pipe, like from 1974 would be neat. They ran the muffler up the back of the rear triangle and seemed a neat bike.

Yeah so straight throughs were ending in one pipe yes?? 4 into1's??

I have some mixed thoughts on this.

My K1100LT decided to crack the headers as they all do. Now when I took it home it was so silent I loved it. As quiet as the other Ks it was joining.

But it split, and for various reasons took time to get at it. But the most immediate effect was that in town pedestrians would walk out in front of me all the time.

Wisdom in the sense that a replacement used one was going to be expensive, and also likely to do the same thing.

So  a Remus went on. Not particularly noisy but much more oomph in noise terms than the standard one. Now no issue with pedestrians walking out so a happy camper. Its done 18 months on it now. I go through a tunnel most days and what a sound.

But recently a relatively unused early K100RS has come. Stock exhaust and I just absolutely love the silence and turbine like sound. Would I change it? No. The sound of the stock pipe turns heads too.

I live rural and have happy horses in the fields around me, a riding school next to me. Would I recommend a noisy bike near green lanes, never. I have horses up and down past me all day, never an issue at all with anyone. We all exist together without a bother. Yes, if I meet a horse coming up the road toward me I pull over and kill the engine and without fail always a thank you.

A cop in the US found the cure for the cracking header pipes. They used to put a large jubilee clip around the four header pipes back from the muffler I think about 6"-8". It apparently changes the frequency of the exhaust resonance that was the cause of the cracking.

I had a Remus exhaust on my first K100RS16V when I got it.

I don't know much about the other models in the Remus line, but mine was embarrassingly noisy, especially so in the lower gears riding in town.  I sold it and replaced it with a stock K100 2v exhaust which worked a treat after a bit of fiddling to get it to fit the mounts.  Had 20,000 trouble-free miles with that pipe until the bike was totaled in an accident.

As a potential damage, you could also receive, if you pass on the road near my house, and depending of my mood at the moment:
- biker friendly congratulations
- random slugs
- a bucket of cold water
- a bucket of boiling water
- a fistfull of small rops
- a fisfull of mid-size rops
- one big heavy rock (don't like this as I have to aim too precisely compared to rops)
- my cat
- my wife
- all my family together with rops and slugs in the pockets plus a boiled wet cat.

Noise sucks.

Okay, so he wants noisier exhaust system. And maybe it is "less social".

Don the anorak and give the Harley tossers grief, or the Ducati owners or the Guzzi Mk 111 etc etc.

Loosen the collar fellas and reflect on those times you had a smile from ear to ear as you roared down the road. The aural component is such a central element to so much of motorcycling.

And yes, the weekend warriors in their leather... astride the noisy chrome do give me the shits.

This i thought was the most useful and helpful section of the forum and in the past has helped me beyond belief, however it seams alot of members just want to TRY bullying people instead of helping, your a very weird bunch. I'm ok i can take the lot, but you should all think before you post your bull, a million cars and bikes have exhausts which sound good the same amount that sound bad ffs you all need to grow up, And yes ive had a f--- shit day
