good morning campers. i've had an R100 since 1984 (authority 1983), and pretty much ignored the K589 series because of ignorance and fear. two years ago i bought a 1985 K100RS in skanderborg (denmark) since the R bikes were 2X expensive there... and i've loved it. so much so that i got another 1985 K100RS for the home base (la honda, california), and a third one (1984 K100RS) in pool (england) which i now keep in london. having fixed datsuns, i know the L-Jetronic well, and am gradually getting all three bikes back to factory spec, other than one thing: i hate the mirrors, so i've gradually put K100 (short) mirrors on, and covered over the holes where the factory mirrors were attached. this means putting brush guards on the grips and rewiring the turn signals to that location -- it's a better look, and i find it harder to hit things while parking. i'll post pictures soonly. oh and there's a 1981 R100 (started its life as an RT but is naked now) in karlsruhe (germany). every one of the five is my favourite while i'm riding it!

Assuming you lane split in the Bay Area I'd recommend getting some city cases.  They make splitting much easier, especially in The City where the lanes are so skinny.

i bought it from a private seller, discovered via britain's web forums. i left it in a shop there for a winter season and rode it to gairloch in late spring. it deserves a better owner, the friend in london whose name it is registered under doesn't ride it much.

on my way to yosemite and back recently, i split lanes for 50 miles each way (interstate 580, going and coming) and never had a problem. the bags are the same width as my bars, so i use the bars as the cat's whiskers. i don't split lanes inside san francisco itself, and i didn't even when growing up there in the 1970's. there's enough lane to lane fluidity that i can get where i need to be without worrying about somebody moving to the bad part of their lane at the wrong moment.

by the way i was harrassed twice while splitting I580 going west last sunday. one pickup truck with texas plates took special umbrage, moved over, raced his motor, and then tried to chase me.

I knocked off a system case in Daly City filtering at a stop light a few years back. My K1100RS bars and K1100RS mirrors (that are like K100RS mirrors but with 1" spacers) cleared just fine. The side case - not so much - got knocked off of the bike by a truck bumper and almost took me down with it.

Unless I'm on a long ride I always run city cases in CA.
