G'day forum,
I'm having trouble removing the O ring on the output shaft in order to release the clutch housing on my 84 K100 RS. The Haynes manual says to remove the retaining nut and shouldered spacer which I have done. Next it says "grasp the housing in both hands and move it back and forth along the shaft splines until the O ring can be reached and removed with a pointed instrument. I can only get the housing to move a short distance and am not able to get at the O ring.
Questions: how far do I have to move the housing towards the motor to be able to get at the O ring? What's the best method to do this?
Is there another way to get the housing off the splines to replace the O ring and rear oil seal?

Looking forward to some suggestions
Regards
Leon

Push the clutch basket all of the way in and then yank on it really hard.  Then push it back slowly to see if you can snag the O-ring with something pointy. It may take a few tries.

A dental pick works well for fishing that o-ring out.  Or you can get the picks at Harbor Freight.  That's what I have used.  You need to jam the pick into the o-ring after working the clutch basket as the duck has advised.

You are going to destroy the o-ring so make sure you have a new one available.  If I recall, it is 4mmx19mm.  Get the Viton version at the local bearing and seal dealer.

Thank you for your advice gentlemen.
The clutch housing was quite difficult to move far enough to expose the O ring. Eventually I used a small 3 legged puller to move the housing back far enough to jam the O ring. After pushing the housing forward again I was able to get under the O ring with a pair of bent circlip pliers.
It took several attempts and in doing so I managed to push the clutch release arm bush further into the end of the output shaft.

I had no choice but to tap the bush and screw it out. This necessitated making a new bush because our Aussie BMW parts dealer (Munich Motorcycles) doesn't stock them. He said that in 35 yrs he has never been asked for one. so that's a first.

Anyway, all done now and clutch is back together with new output shaft oil seal and O ring and new moly grease on the splines.

Cheers
Leon
