TJH has a cafe with Busa forks and aftermarket controls. When he was at my place yesterday he mentioned that the bike doesn't start very well.  One obvious reason is that his 85 K100 cafe doesn't have a "choke."

Wondering if any of you cafe builders have found a way to implement a choke with non-BMW controls.

Just a thought, Duck the fast idle control doesn't have to be on the handle bars. You should be able to fit a universal choke control anywhere. You could also use the OEM throttle lock or an aftermarket one to increase the revs for starting.
Regards Martin.

Use l/h switches with a built-in choke lever. That's what I have.

Well the madass just plain doesn't have one, throttles are balanced, ignition is advanced, plugs are good - it starts and ticks over fine. True, I don't ride in sub zero, or even roundabout zero, but I'm also a believer in getting on and riding rather than letting it 'warm up' on a fast idle.
The other thing you could do is install a switch to stop the alternator charging whilst it warms up, it cuts the load on the engine and a switch is much easier to figure out than a mechanism for the fast idle.

I was thinking of trying to get a manual choke conversion right at the throttle body's or whatever it is called.  Right at the choke lifting mechanism.  I now they make one for an r80, but doubtful it would work for k as I was just looking at it.  Also worst case scenario I was thinking of totally Mcguyvering it and just cut the choke cable short and use a key chain round thingy and then solder the cable back to its self and bob's your uncle choke pull right at the lifter.  I works out in my head anyway.

Fire it up and ride off. That avoids need for choke. The only time mine ever need choke is if I want to fire it up and let it idle. But I never do that. Otherwise it starts up and I ride off without any problem and just ride gently for the first few miles......

I agree with Chris, the whole mechanism is missing from Lucky3 and I have no problems starting, give it a bit of throttle and away it goes.

I do ride in winter and sub zero and never an issue. Yes, it wont tick over on a frosty morning from cold without choke but if I am in gear ready to go and fire up and go there is no issue.
