Hi all,

Posting this up in response to K-Bike's prompt. I actually thought I had already done this, but I joined a couple of forums within the space of a few days and obviously missed introducing myself on this one.

I live near Canberra, Australia and purchased an ex-police 1986 K100RT with 122K kilometres in late October last year. It had a problem with jumping out of second gear, so it went straight into my garage for a gearbox replacement. I fitted a new rear tyre and had some cracks in the exhaust welded up at the same time. It was back on the road a couple of weeks later and has been performing flawlessly ever since. I've also changed all the fluids, so now I'm down to fixing small things as I go and just enjoying riding it. It has plenty of company in the garage, but is definitely seeing the most action at present so I suspect all the other bikes are jealous.

I've previously owned a 1977 R100RS with an R90S engine, dellorto carbs, dual-plug heads, dyna coils & electronic ignition, RT fairings and a California Friendship II sidecar, so this isn't my first BMW but it is my first K-bike.

Ensure the oil level is correct in the sight glass...otherwise you will get an oil leak if overfilled and it will get to your rear tyre.

PS. You will find this the best forum.

Hi Stout,
Great to have you on board here especially as you live close by relatively speaking most others being 12,000 miles away. Nice to see your input on the forum as well it is sharing like that which makes the difference, there is such a wealth of experience here it is amazing. One thing about the K's is to ensure that all the earths and plugs and sockets are in tip top shape becuause they carry quite small voltages and currents to the ignition unit and the engine management system and only a little fluctuating resistance can cause a lot of problems. Jaycar sell DeoxIT in two small nail varnish bottles ~ $20 or so from memory and that is the gold standard in contact cleaners. Go onto the Caig (the makers) website and trawl through there are some interesting photos of contacts in section showing cracks in the coating with all the gunk in them.
Regards,
K-BIKE

Howdy Stout, you'll find plenty of help here, and some humour too. A great forum.
Regards, Dennis
