I've pulled down my K100RS to the nuts and bolts for a refurbishment, much like Crazy Frog did in his article. In examining the clutch I see it should be replaced since it's worn, and I'm right there anyhow. Where to get the best deal? Ideally the whole thing should be replaced, any thoughts on just doing the friction disc? Anyone have one to part with (Canada/North America)?

If you only need the disk, you are better to buy a new one.
If the housing faces are not scored, you will be ok by replacing only the disk.
I read somewhere that the disk from the old VW beetle fits the K100, but for for a few bucks difference in price, I would buy a genuine BMW.

As for the best deal I am very pleased with the results from Bike Bandit although they only sell new. Price wise they are competitive with Motorworks and Motobins in the UK with excellent freight times although not cheap in that area. (There is a price for speed). Beemerboneyard is also good and seem to have stuff coming in all the time so just because it says not in stock on the website means it is worth a query.
You could also try www.ascycles.com and I am sure there are probably a lot more in your part of the world.
Essentially the last place I will deal with price wise is the local BMW dealer.

Thanks to all who have posted so far. Phil, I checked BikeBandit but they don't seem to do BMW? Any other aftermarket BMW parts sales places in Canada or USA? Hate to pay full pop for a BMW part if I can avoid it.

Maximum clutch life will only be gained by replacing all of the friction surfaces. What often looks like mild hot-spotting on the pressure plates can turn out to be a major bother when you want things to go smoothly but attempt to get pieces spinning together that are 'set in their ways' and have not been familiar with one another for many revolutions, engagements and disengagements.

But if you really wanna do it on the cheap, whack just a new or used disc in there and enjoy it while it's good. You'll be back in there looking at it again soon enough.

Motorworks won't post to the USA or Canada 'for insurance reasons' but Motobins UK will get it to you quickly and for relatively reasonable dosh. I placed an order to them on their Monday morning and received it on my Thursday arvo in Australia.

Have to concur re speed from the UK as I ordered a rear brake disc last year and it too 4!!! days to reach Tasmania. To put that into perspective Australia Post has difficulty guaranteeing that sort of service within the country for a letter let alone a parcel.

As for BikeBandit they did do BMW the last time I used them but you need to look under OEM http://www.bikebandit.com/bmw-motorcycle-parts/oem-parts and also have an excellent microfiche type parts breakdown which is very useful.

Yes, having researched a little further I see BB does have Bimmer parts, though the prices seems similar to BMW. See that Motobins actually has a good price, now just need to see how much to send across the pond.

I find I have to keep an eye on the exchange rate as our currency goes up and down like the proverbial but currently it is strong against the pound so I tend to choose either Motorworks or Motobins. Freight is always the expensive part and is about the same from the US or UK but it is damn fast so I can't complain.

Ordered a new friction disc, nut, o-rin and pressure plate bolts yesterday from an aftermarket BMW service place. Didn't go with a new pressure plate though. Should arrive next week.

I had the dubious honor of buying a brand spanking NEW clutch plate for my '85 K100 all for the reasonable sum of $254 (plate only)..under the assumption that my existing unit was defunct....pay attention...Check the clutch cable slack 1st! The point is that i have a very serviceable clutch plate available for your bike. Email and we'll discuss the details... It's minus 5 c here today so definitely balaclava weather.
