My Mum let me replace the timing chain on my R75 back in about the Winter of '78 or '79 in the kitchen while she baked some tasty goodies in her wood-burning stove/oven combo - we were of the 'split wood not atoms' variety growing up. Dad helped me wrestle the motor back into the frame (I didn't know I could have done the job motor-in 'til later on).

To put it into more technical terms I would say at a glance that it is Shagged. There is a good possibliity that the rust goes deep enough to prevent repair.
You may be able to get a speedy sleeve, a stainless sleve that goes over that area and makes a new sealing surface.

Well, once again I'm impressed with the quality of the components in our old girls. A quick dip in Eastwood rust remover and some work with 000 steel wool took care of the rust, and than a little final work with some super fine emery cloth and it's good to go. Very Happy

Hi OG,

Good to hear that the side panels arrived OK. Bins still have them listed today, still @ £9.90 a pair.

http://stores.ebay.co.uk/motobinsbmw?_rdc=1

With the rear seal, if the original surface is pitted it is possible to leave the seal slightly proud of it's housing, thereby allowing the seal lip to run on an unworn area of the bearing carrier.

Cheers, Paul.

Great work, OG. That FD seal tip applies to the main drive seal as well. That accounts for the recommendation from BMW to leave the seal 0.5mm proud of the engine casting.

Ok, guys messed around practicing with the old seal reinstalling it using a duct tape roll adjusted to the proper size as a drift and also played around with pieces of wood cut to size and what not. It is a fiddly job and its very easy to pop the seal thru the other side and variations on that theme. Since it was so easy to separate the ring gear from the inner case half once it was heated up, I simply applied moderate pressure with both thumbs and it popped right out, I thought why not try the same sort of technique with the seal. I heated up the case half to only about 50 C vs. 80 C for removing the ring drive and than lubed up the outer edge of the seal with a bit of silicone spray. Wearing some thick rubber gloves I was able to pop the new seal in with moderate pressure from just my thumbs and get it aligned quite easily there after all with no drift or hammering. Also, installed the seal very slightly proud so it is working on a new spot on the drive gear. Thanks again for the tip on that guys!

OG85 RS restoration (part #1) - Page 17 Dsc_0034

Ditto for no drift needed for putting the gear drive back in the case.

Ok, quick run to HF this morning to pick up some bits and now I think I'm finally ready to do the front end swap. Also, got one of their cheap front wheel chocks so I can finally setup the preload, rebound, and I'm sure do a little fine tuning on the new fork as well.

Hey K,

Not sure about the "beacon" part as I've probably cocked-up at least 75% of the seals first time thru on the bike by now. Embarassed Anyway, once I discovered the driftless method and realized how quickly this could be done I just had my buddy drop his FD off and changed his out in maybe thirty minutes max. When I get some more spare time I will try to edit some of the pics I have and add instructions. If I'd have been thinking I would have had my buddy take a movie of the repair with his phone.

Cool

Blimey OG that bike looks so good hey you must have your own postie you have certainly been keeping yours busy Laughing, there is enough material here for a mini TV show forget Tank rebuild lets have a BMW K100 rebuild. Joking apart fantastic job mate.

Talking about jobs in the house who remembers the old chain grease you could buy in a metal buiscuit type tin which you warmed on a stove the grease melted and the chain submerged into a steaming stinking tin and liquid grease worked its way into the rollers, you then fished it out and let it cool job done, well I used the old ladies cooker once and got a thick ear for my troubles long live shaftdrive.
