Hi
Just got the K100, 1986 from the USA.
Was a bit worse looking that I had hoped. Has plainly been down a number of times so the faring and engine guards are broken.
But here is a list of my first observations and questions:
1.The key is missing
Q. can a key be made by vin number?
2. The faring is broken in a few places.
Q. Is it easy to convert a faring bike to a naked one, what parts have to be swaped?
3. The clutch is stuck, the level can not be moved.
Q: Can this be anything else that the cable?
Other observations:
The battery is missing
The front forks are leaking
The rear light is broken along with one front turning signal light.
Both front and rear tires are shot (this I knew)
Both engine guards are broken from the engine
One leg of the center stand is broken off
Guess this in enough for now.
I will be traveling to LA CA later this month, any pointers on where to get good used BMW parts there
Regards Ragnar

Sounds like the previous owner was not exactly truthful about it's condition.

For parts try Kbike parts he is in Seatle and another I deal with in US is Pinwall in Ohio both are reasonably priced and honest about condition.

Motobins in UK for new BMW gear and some second hand parts.

The clutch problem could be one of a number of things. cable first also the actuating lever at the rear of the gearbox or the clutch itself.

You can buy the key blanks from motobins and often Ebay and any good locksmith can cut a key to match or put new tumblers in the lock.

Can be done...must be ordered from Germany, prepare for a lot of paper work.

Another source for used (and new) parts is Motorworks.

Well first step completed.
Connected the new battery, checked the fuel filter and fresh gas in the tank and she fired right up.
one question, there is a kind o whining noise when she is running, anybody know what that is.
Step two will be changing oil and oil filter, air filter and spark plugs.
Step three will be getting the original part needed, such as fork seals, rear master cylinder, tires, break light, battery holder and conversion bits.

Thats a K bike.

It is caused mainly because the gears are straight cut except for 5th which is helical cut.

for a gearbox that was made and designed by Getrag they sure are noisy. Clunk grind whine groan but they keep going.

sorry raggun ...i was being silly ..

yes they do ....from the cam chain area ...verry distinctive .....come to think of it many of the early 4 pot 900 + kawasakies had a verry similar whistle and wine about them also ....but as k freak said above...the gearbox and drive chain also is a little "whiney" beleive me its all normal and you get used to it real quick .....a verry distinctive give away to that bike you can hear comming or going ....

for the moment ...just put thos earplugs in and ride when you can ....giggles
